Good day. I have just installed plex. Seems to be going well however it does not play all the codecs that VLC player plays as standard.
Is there something wrong with my Plex or does VLC just come standard with a much wider range of codecs. Please advise. Regards.
I suggest providing more information with your question:
(1) What platform and app(s) are you trying to playback on?
(2) What device(s) are you using as your server?
There are a lot of factors that affect what codecs, etc. that you can play back with Plex.
Having a Plex Pass also affects what the server can do, in terms of hardware transcoding, etc.
Overall, Plex is the extremely capable.
I love plex and the interface.
I’m. Just struggling with getting kiddies TV shows playing through the please media server. (I’m playing it through the PC it is installed) on and I’m getting the "conversion failed " error message.

What version of Plex Media Server are you running?
Are you playing the TV Shows through the Plex Media Player program, through the old/deprecated Windows store app, or through the web browser (if browser, which one)?
Please provide server logs. To do so:
(1) Log into app.plex.tv in your browser of choice. Click on the settings icon, top right.
(2) Navigate on the left to “General” under settings. Click “Show Advanced” and then make sure that “Enable Plex Media Server Debug Logging” is enabled. Do NOT enable verbose.
(3) Download the logs and upload them here.

Plex Media Server is not the player it’s what serves up the files. What player are you using? It’s up to the player itself on what codecs it supports.
VLC is a dedicated video player, it has no server ability. You’re comparing apples to gorillas. 
If you are using a computer, a better comparison would be to use the Plex Media Player client. This has a much wider range of codec support.
