Plex Media Server won't open/login

hey all, I’m semi-new to plex and struggling with a few things.

after having everything working perfectly I had a random login from a different device and had to reset my password. After I did this, I wasn’t able to access my media on any of the devices logged into my account. My friends have still been able to access my media under their accounts just fine, however, so I’m not actually sure what’s wrong.

I have never been able to actually open the PMS app, only the web app itself. I assumed PMS did everything itself, that’s what a friend told me. But since i can’t log into the server with the new password (I actually changed it back to see if that would help, it did not), I can’t fix anything.

I tried reinstalling the app as well to see if it would do anything but nope! Please let me know what I can do or if there are any forums related to this. I feel like I’ve been going in circles between forums and support articles

When you reset your password, did you leave the box checked that signs you out of all your devices? That is the preferred thing to do, after which you have to sign in to your players with the new password and sign in to your server to (re)claim it.

PMS has no GUI itself. It uses the web player to administer it.

If you did not have that box checked, tell us.

Two ways to inspect your server are as follows. In this example, a PMS server living at IP address 192.168.1.20 can be queried from a desktop computer on the same subnet by visiting http://192.168.1.20:32400/identity which you should be able to copy/paste into your browser URL. If PMS is running, you should get a reply of XML data where it would say amongst other things either
claimed="0" or it might say
claimed="1"

tell us which one it says.

After you’ve signed into the hosted web app with your new password, you should be able to examine what devices are associated with your account using
Settings → Authorized Devices

  • if you saw claimed="1" in the previous identity step, then your PMS server should be listed with a date after the password reset
  • if you saw claimed="0" in the previous identity step, then your PMS server (if listed) should only have a date from before the password reset, telling you that you still have to claim it in order to be able to access it and administer it.

Tell us what you see, and have a look at these articles which explain how to reset passwords and reclaim your server while you wait for folks to reply to this thread.

Thank you for getting back to me! I did check the box to sign out of all devices and after signing in it did not allowed me back into my libraries. I struggled with the IP inspections you recommended but the articles you suggested were great - I had to go looking for “hidden system tray items” and something there let me login to the server. Not sure why this time was different than my first sign-in but I’m glad it’s working again!
