Plex Media Server won't start up after server crash

Server Version#: plexmediaserver_1.32.4.7195-7c8f9d3b6_amd64.deb
Player Version#: All + Web

My home Ubuntu server took a nosedive yesterday. Along with a network switch. That made for a fun Saturday morning.

To get the server back up, I had to fsck my main drive, then I got it to boot. But Plex would not start up properly. I was still gettin disk IO errors, so I ran Spinrite overnight to check the disk. This morning all was well, and I started Plex only to have it fail.

The logs shows that the Preferences.xml file was corrupt. I checked the file and it was full of garbage. So, I renamed it, and restarted Plex.

Now Plex Media Server fired up with a bunch of running processes. But it still doesn’t show up when I login to plex.tv and if I access it directly with http://server_ip:32400, it just loads a white blank page.

When I grep Plex Media Server.log for the word ERROR, I only get these two lines:

Jul 02, 2023 11:12:12.076 [139881159834256] ERROR - [CERT] PKCS12_parse failed: error:11800071:PKCS12 routines::mac verify failure
Jul 02, 2023 11:12:12.076 [139881159834256] ERROR - [CERT] Found a certificate, but couldn't install it.

I can post the entire log if it helps.

I deleted the contents of the Cache directory and that error is now gone. But Plex still won’t work. I still get a blank page when accessing directly on 32400 and my server does not show up on plex.tv.

you need to reclaim it.

Shouldn’t I still be able to access it from http://serverip:32400

  1. Open https://app.plex.tv – Remove the old server from Authorized Devices → Server (dropdown) if it’s still there.

  2. Next, You need a NEW, INCOGNITO, browser window (close existing windows first)

  3. Now open the LAN IP address (I presume this is RFC-1918 compliant LAN) and you are on the same subnet. http://LAN.IP.of.Server:32400/web

That looks like it fixed it. Thank you for the help!

I need to redo all my shares. But everything else seems to be OK.
