I’ve installed the Plex Media Server on a desktop, using an external harddrive to store all media.
Now I’m running out of space, so I want to buy a NAS for the storage.
At first I thought it should be better to buy a NAS on which Plex Media Server can be installed so the NAS can take care of transcoding.
But I also see some items about Nvidia Shield TV and Apple TV with Plex; now is my question: is this the Plex Server App of only the App for playing content from another Media Server?
If it is the Plex Media Server App - is it better to use either one those combined with a NAS with less powerful processor (only for storage of the media), or to use a more powerful NAS with Plex Media Server installed on the NAS?
You can run the Plex Media Server on the Nvidia Shield but as far as I know you can only run the player on the Apple TV.
You can get a NAS like Synology or QNAP and run the Plex Media Server on the NAS however their processing power is fairly limited unless you spend big bucks for higher end models.
You can build your own NAS with software like UnRaid or FreeNAS and throw more processing power at it for cheaper and run Plex Media Server on that (I use UnRaid myself)
You also have to think if you run the server in the Nvidia you will want your Nvidia running 24/7 if you do things like DVR.
I would say having an al in one box i.e. NAS that runs Plex is the best option but can get expensive depending on setup.
