What kind of NAS to buy/run?

Hi, Plex newbie here. Want to set up an NAS to feed Plex media server. I have the Plex app available on my Panasonic 4k oled tv. My question is:. Should I buy and install NAS hard drives along with the Plex app or is the app on my TV sufficient? (In which case I won’t install Plex on my NAS drive) I’m going to use it to watch mkv movies ripped from my Blu-ray collection. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hey Bes,

You need to do a bit more reading on how PLEX works.
Briefly PLEX SERVER is an app the Serves plex media to a Plex player (aka client).

You TV has a Plex player (only) - It will do nothing unless it has a server feeding it media.

Depending on your NAS many have a PLEX SERVER app.

Install that and then it can stream to your TV !

Thanks for your reply, Spike. I realized I needed a player and server…just wanted to know if the Plex server app needed to be installed on the NAS or could I configure the Player to find the drives with the movie files on the NAS. And if so would it still be better to I stall the Plex app on the NAS drive.
I apologize for both my lack of knowledge and poorly worded post.

You would need to be able to install and run the Plex Media Server on the NAS. Plex player apps cannot just connect to a drive or NAS and start playing back media files.

More info and things to consider when thinking about using a NAS to run the Plex Media Server can be found here

You can of course only use the NAS as storage and run the server on a computer which can see the NAS over network, but a Plex player app alone cannot do that.

Thank you BigWheel. That’s very helpful!
