Good Day, All.
I’ve reached the closing stages of setting up and the data migration to my Synology DS423+
I got by with a little help from friends (this forum)
There are a couple of issues I have had and if there is any feedback, I would appreciate it before I make the “Plex Plus” move.
Loading videos, music and other items to the Plex server has presented some issues. Forgive me if I’m over simplifying things, however my take is the Plex Media folder on the NAS is a file explorer, and I’m confused as to why I have to toggle back and fort in edit of a container in the Plex server between disable and show don’t show, save for the movies to be enabled/visable in the Plex server than the TV app. Am I missing something, or is there a setting that needs to be turned on for it to be seamless? F5 also doesn’t refresh the files in the server app, without that toggling.
I’m still struggling a bit with files showing on the server side. One is a movie. It’s an A list movie for me and now the only one that refuses to load or be recognized in the container of the server. All my movies (MP4 & MKV) have been copied with the exact same settings. So, in order to remediate the issue after multiple delets and reloads in the movie container without success, I was able to seamlessly get it to load via the “Other Videos” container… I would love to be able to move it, however a copy from one container to the other (movies), it still does not show up. I have the same issues with basic photos.
Is it the NAS, is it Plex? Truly confused. Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated,
Though the process is the same experience across all folders, I’ll run with movies.
After the NAS set-up and the Plex server install, I grabbed about twenty percent of my movies via the Plex Server folder from the NAS interface within a browser. I now have a path setup with my Windows 11 explorer for all folders.
After the load of that twenty percent, I went to the movie folder and there were no movies displayed. I searched the forum and came up with a resolution that worked. It was going to that folder, from the dots select edit, and change how the movies display and selected “save changes” Once changed to any of the three options the server interface went to work and the movies displayed.
With the changed setting more movies were loaded, did not show, went back and changed the display option to another and the movies loaded in the folder on the server. I have to repeate this process each time a file or filesare loaded into the Plex media server explorer via the NAS.
Editing those settings probably triggers a library scan. Do you have “Scan my library automatically” enabled? If not, you’ll have to manually rescan your library for any new items to appear in Plex.
Does the file name/organization follow Plex’s naming guidelines? And do you have a similarly named movie on your server that Plex might be merging together? Outside of that, permissions are the next most likely cause of things not showing up, but that doesn’t seem to apply here if it shows up with an “other videos” library (which doesn’t care as much about naming conventions).
Ummm… Oh My. So, the file name was “Invincible.mp4”. Per the last attempt, I did not delete it from the Plex media folder. I went into the movie folder of Plex media on the NAS and renamed the file to “Invincible (2006).MP4” and the movie immediately appeared without a refresh. A quick search shows multiple movies/videos out in the world under “Invincible” and I’m guessing Plex didn’t know what to do?
Interestingly, none of the other movies (146) have a year listed in the file name, yet loaded and have the proper movie cover, overview, and cast. At least those that I have checked. However at a visual of the cover for each movie, they are all correct.
Now, my take is: the count total showed all movies including Invincible, it just wouldn’t display. So, I would like to have the server automatically refresh. In the server general settings and the folder settings, I cannot find any reference to"scan my library automatically."
When all else fails, read the instructions. In my defense and ignorance, seeing all other movies load, I didn’t think about the year. Again, instructions are not just suggestions, and my failure to read them is no excuse.
This community has always been helpful and engaging. That is very much appreciated!! I’m sure there are times that you with the obvious out there, at times responders understandable want to pull their hair out.
It’s been a learning experience. I’ve learned that folders within a folder can be done. A lot of work went into the movies. I would love to create folders for movies. i.e. drama, comedy, sports, etc. however I Do Not Want To Mess Things Up with the work already invested. Can I creat sub-folders in the Plex movie folder and move movies to folders accordingly? Would you suggest that. If questionably, I’m fine with things the way they are.
I’d generally recommend against that, at least in the context of Plex specifically. If you want to categorize your movies, you could use collections or filters to group specific genres. If you really wanted to separate them in your filesystem, you would want to add each subfolder individually under Manage Library > Edit > Add folders, since Plex doesn’t really extra subfolders. E.g. if you have /data/Movies/Drama/[Movies] and /data/Movies/Comedy/[Movies], you would want to add both /data/Movies/Drama and /data/Movies/Comedy to your library, not just /data/Movies.
I did a test and created a sub-folder for what I would call a “D” movie in my collection. And it does show under the folder in both the server and the client app. Considering your reply and for the work I’ve put in, I’m not going to mess with things.
Again, I really appreciate your help. More so, that the information is out there for the reading. I’ll do a better job at that.
