@BigWheel - this fixed my issue, for whatever reason. I can play media from PMS on all devices now. Thank you for the assist.
Would you mind describing the basic process? I’ve looked for instructions for installing Plex on my NAS, but the only thing I was able to find is the built-in installation. I have no idea how to install from the Plex downloads page.
@shauledelman unfortunately the WD MyCLoud Home does not work the same as most other NAS’s It runs on Android and Western Digital controls what can be updated. They have not approved an update to the server in a while which we are still working on with them.
As far as I can tell this is somehow related to secure connections and our WD MyCloud Home we test on is working with the same version you have.
Is it possible you can message me your server logs. Also if you are only having issues with Android on the local network can you try going into the Android settings and set “Allow Insecure Connection” to be “On the same Network”
@BigWheel My Andorid app was already set to allow insecure connections, but the issue persists.
Attached are the logs I downloaded from the Plex web app.
Plex Media Server Logs_2021-06-11_19-32-36.zip (925.6 KB)
I’m really hoping we can find a solution. Otherwise I’ll try going back to the WD EX2 Ultra I got originally, but it’s double the price…
Thanks!
@shauledelman can you describe how your network is set up? Your logs have a bunch of CURL errors that usually indicate a DNS issue.
Please excuse my ignorance, but I’m not sure what specifically you mean to ask. I simply have the NAS plugged into my router. Not aware of any specific setups.
I am experiencing the same issue.
I have noticed the following:
- remote access: works in browser, not in app
- local network: works in browser and in app (after force stopping)
So do you need logs from the android app?
My DNS has been setup with the standard 1.1.1.1 8.8.8.8
Was a fix for this found? Will only stream in browser. Says remote access is unavailable outside of network, but this is not true.
I’m on version 1.19.3.2831.
I had my certificate reset, but that didn’t work. Before this, it had been up and running successfully for 241 days, then suddenly broke.
why on such an old version?
the app saying remote access is available or not only means that Plex.tv can ping it with the externalIP/Port or not.
Hmm…yes, I see there have been multiple updates in the last year. I’m running on FreeNas and it’s honestly more of a hassle to update than it’s been worth. I will try to update the version and see if that helps.
Aside from that, no clue why one day it works, the next it doesn’t. Hopefully updating will fix this.
There could be a million reasons, I don’t like speculating but generally has to do with some nonstandard, non-simple network set up we might not be accounting for. We have heard of some ISPs actively block Plex at times causing issues; DNS rebinding, VPNs, dockers not set up correctly, are just a few examples of things that can cause it. Of course there could be a bug in server or client we have not figured out either.
Yeah, the update fixed it. I had updated it about a year ago, never had a motivation to update. That’s a good lesson: read changelogs and perform regular updates.
Also, anybody else stumbling around this issue, it seems that this can occur if the server is out of date: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/ol7qv9/anyone_having_this_problem_my_movies_are/
I paid for 2 separate Plex android app. None of those can read anything from my server which works perfectly and is up to date.
Every other connection work fine: LG TV, Shield TV, Chromecast, in fact, casting anywhere even from the Android app works fine.
But playing it directly on your phone just says “an error occurred while playing this item”.
So no, it’s not a “it could be a million reasons” problem, it’s a “fix your sh!!t” problem ; cause I’ve paid for something that doesn’t do sh!!t right now!
is there any update to this?
That depends what you mean by “this.” I opened the thread and the initial issue was solved by upgrading my Plex server version manually on my QNAP NAS. I’m not aware of any other issues in the thread, so I couldn’t be more helpful there.
I have the same Problem. Synology with the beta plex installed. LG TV plays all Videos. The App plays nothing. Only the plex online content.
Had the same issue here. Synology NAS, installed the Plex Beta app and set it up. Could play videos in the browser perfectly fine, LG TV was perfectly happy playing videos, but my Android phone wouldn’t.
I went to my Plex server, it told me there was a Manual upgrade. I downloaded the update file that, went to the Package Center of my NAS, clicked on ‘Manual install’, uploaded the file, installed the update and after that my Android phone plays everything just as fine as everything else.
So to anyone having issues, I would highly suggest updating your Plex server.
