Server Version#:
Player Version#: Android TV App 8.17.1.25326
I’ve had a really weird experience in the last couple days with Plex not playing movies/tv shows on my android devices(TV Box, and mobile phone); works perfectly fine through a internet browser and my iPads though. I’ve tried searching the forum for a similar case and nothing to be found. I’m at a loss with what’s going on since it works fine using a internet browser and my iPads. Android keeps giving me the error 'An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again". Also I tried the ‘use external player’ option on my mobile android phone and it works fine that way. The TV box app doesn’t have that option though.
Thanks
If you go to Settings → Transcoder, is Disable video stream transcoding Unchecked?
If not, uncheck, save it and try to play your movie again
It’s unchecked. I did find something about that earlier and found it was unchecked then as well. So for fun I tried checking it, play a video, which obviously caused it not to play, then unchecked it, refreshed everything, and still having the same problem of only my Android devices not playing movies/tv shows.
Enabled debug logs (not verbose) recreate the problem, download the logs from Settings > Troubleshooting and then post it here

I uploaded two different logs. First one downloaded from the online Plex Server itself, and then from my Android device.
Is your server a My Cloud Home?
Remove Plex from your phone, install this previous version and test it

Yes it is a WD MyCloud Home.
I’ll do that.
Still getting the same error with that previous version. Attached a log file.

You’re running a very old version of plex server (over a year old). Can you try updating it while I take a look at the logs?
I’ll look into that. Didn’t know I could update the Plex app on the WD MyCloud Home.
I’ve found out that WD will push updates to the My Cloud Home series of NAS drives when PLEX sends them the updates. Now when WD sends those updates it can be a long time before it’s done according to what I found on the WD forums. Other then that I have no way of manually doing it. Wish I would of knew that before hand. Wouldn’t of bought this model of NAS.
I also have a WD NAS (different model) and you can update it manually. That’s what everyone does.
If your screen look like that, click on that “install manually” button. It will ask if you want to override the existing version, you click on yes.
Yes that’s the option I found out I don’t have. I’d have to buy another model.
Alternatively you could install Plex Server on a PC and use your NAS to storage your movies only.
If you really have plans to get another NAS, go for Synology or Qnap. Stay away from WD.
Regards your problem, there’s another person with the exacly same problem as you. Same NAS and player versions, but I’m out of option and my guess it that your Server version is too old and incompatible with new players.
As a last try install this 2-month old version of the Player and check if it works

I’ll have to try that with my computer.
Any specific NAS’s from Synology or QNAP you recommend?
What about the TerraMaster’s? I liked the hardware of the one I was looking at for when I decided to give my home theatre an upgrade.
I’ll give that version a shot, and hopefully it works.
ChuckPa is the best person to give you a recommendation. Just tell him what’s your requirements like number simultaneous streams, storage capacity, etc… And he can give you a list of goodies
Okay, thanks for the help.
@ChuckPa I tried messaging you privately, but that’s off right now.
I’m looking for NAS recommendations as CostaHT mentioned you would be the guy for that info.
I don’t have huge requirements I don’t think. I’d like something capable of streaming to 10 devices at a time, at 1080p, and surround sound(Atmos if possible).
Thanks
I ended up just installing the server on my computer and everything works again. Have to rematch everything and reorganize it again, but it’s working!
I am having a similar issue with Plex on Android devices.
In my case I have installed Plex from the Play store on my TiVo Stream 4K and I get ‘an error occurred while playing this item’ while trying to play from my Synology DS220j server. I downloaded the Plex app to an Amazon Fire Stick 4K and am receiving the same error.
The Plex app seems to recognize all the songs on the albums. Everything is MP3.
Everything plays just fine on my iPad.
The only other variable that has changed is that I upgraded the Plex service to a lifetime subscription….
Please help.
Thanks,
Joe
