Plex movie agent takes the latest imdb release date as the "Originally Available" date

For example, for the 2001 Japanese film Suicide Club, imdb shows a record of 2021 internet release in Poland. Plex then label this movie as released in 2021. Even though a 2001 original release date should be the intended behavior of the app. Is this a bug?

This movie didn’t have a “real” theatrical, or disc, or streaming release before. All the previous dates are marked as “film festival” or “limited”. And those events don’t count for Plex as a release.
Only the date when the movie became available to the general public counts as release.

The closest would be the 2003 DVD premiere in USA.
Why Plex doesn’t use this I have to ask.

I think that’s a weird arrangement, film festival release should be counted as the original release imo, no?

No, definitely not. In general, it is always the general theatrical relase which counts. There are very few exceptions from this rule.

I understand that’s the plex intended rule, just pointing out that it’s kind of weird in film buffs’ eyes.
When imdb, tmdb and the general consensus view it as a 2001 film, it’s not very consistent (or convenient) that plex labels it 2021, or even 2003 if it takes the US DVD release date.
I think this is quite common among the less mainstream arthouse films.

This has been happening to several of the movies in my library.

2000 – 2014 movies are all popping up in my “Recently Released” row calling them 2022 movies

Also seeing this with Suicide Club.

Why not just use the dates from themoviedb anyway, instead of complicating things like this?

Yes, please allow the option to use “Earliest Release Date” somehow. Manually fixing 1,000 movies is not fun.
