This post is not about Plex and MusciBrainz. Its about how Plex displays Albums, Singles, Live Albums etc.
For example: Artist: Dream Theater
For the album Awake, Plex displays it under Albums: Awake 1994 (No problem)
For the single Another Day, Plex categorises it correctly under Singles & EPs, but lists it as: Dream Theater Another Day.
Why doesn’t Plex display it as: Another Day 1992 consistent with the album configuration/display. I know the single is by Dream Theater as it’s on the Dream Theater Plex page.
The same goes for Live albums e.g Live At Luna Park is correctly categorised as a Live album but the display shows: Dream Theater Live At Luna Park.
Shouldn’t it display: Live At Luna Park 2013
I know singles and live albums are different to albums but shouldn’t Plex be clever enough to display them all in the same manner i.e Title / Year
Edit your music library.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Is the checkbox “Prefer local metatags” filled or empty?
If it’s filled, Plex is reading the release’s title from your files’ embedded meta tags.
Inspect the content of these tags.
This is how those additional relesae types are normally shown:
The “Prefer Local Metatags” is unchecked and has always been.
My question relates to what is in your screen shot:
Why is Frank Zappa’s live album displayed as: Frank Zappa - Zappa/Erie and not Zappa/Erie 2022?
Its not shown on your screen shot but his album Apostrophe would be shown as Apostrophe 1974…but if it was a live album it would be shown as Frank Zappa Apostrophe
Live albums, singles and compilations repeat the artists name and state the title.
Albums don’t repeat the artists name but state the title and the year.
As you can see on my Deep Purple page, the Deep Purple albums state the title and the year. The live albums and others state Deep Purple and the title. We know its Deep Purple because I’m on my Deep Purple page. Why doesn’t it state under live albums, for example: Made In Japan 1972?? (and not display Deep Purple altogether, like the albums)
Refer screen shot: There is a 2 line display for albums: “Title” + “Year”
There is also a 2 line display for Live albums: “Artist” + “Title”. Why isn’t the two line display in Plex for live albums: “Title” + “Year”? (the same as albums)
As an aside, Plexamp displays all entries as “Title” + “Year” its just the web application that is inconsistent.
This has been already frequently criticized. It’s been like that since the release categories have been introduced.
There is a major rework of the web app on the horizon; I assume it’s one of the reasons why this was never picked up.
