This still isn’t working for me, all I want is to get my bootlegs to be recognised as live albums. I’ve tried everything here as well as countless threads on Reddit and elsewhere. I’ve tried going through Picard and MP3Tag. I’ve tried ‘live’ and ‘album;live’ tags. I’ve tried removing, refreshing, all kinds of things. It’s the most frutrating issue I’ve had with Plex by a long shot. Anyone got any updated suggestions? It’s pretty infuriating that this functionality isn’t available in Plex itself to be honest.
According to this original discussion/guide, album;live should do.
Have you refreshed the album metadata after modifying the embedded metadata?
Yes, I did. It had no effect.
Can you show us the tags you are using, screenshot of picard would be helpful. Here is an example of a album which is correctly identified and grouped by plex as live …
You may need to plex dance (all steps) if you have changed the tags on your files. Also, ensure you have prefer local metadata enabled on your library …
… and group albums by type is enabled in your server side library settings …

Maybe related to this recent comment from another thread that suggests there’s a local metadata bug in PMS that needs fixing…
Oh my god, your Picard screengrab saved me! I had been told to create a tag called ‘RELEASETYPE’ - all caps just like I typed. This is on so many forums, I guess it must be outdated? Now that the tag is ‘Release Type’ it works. I think I might have been confused from searching so many places, but this finally solved it for me. Thank you!
That’s correct – for flac files.
Only way I’ve been able to force Plex to classify a live album as a live album is making sure it is an entry on Music Brainz and correctly labeled as a live release there. These type of metadata tricks haven’t worked for me. I still will add a “live” tag in my mp3tag updates for future use…but I always have to verify it against Music Brainz.
