plex Music media library not updating after mp3 tags changed

14.04.2019 - still the same status, if you change mp3 tags, nothing happens, Plex does not update them.

It’s worth noting that this also happens if you have tags in M4V files for movies /tv shows. I have a bunch of movies that were tagged wrong, all called VIDEO_TS in the Title tag. Even though the file names were in the recommended format for Plex, it still imported them into the library with the title VIDEO_TS, even though it brought down all the correct metadata about them. Had to either manually edit the entries to get the titles right even though I fixed the tags in the files. Did the “Plex Dance” and now they are right. face palm. I guess I get not wanting to rescan things needlessly, but we should at least be able to say “No really, I want to start from scratch for this file / album / whatever”.

This particular behaviour can be changed quite easily if you re-order the metadata agents, so that embedded metadata can get overridden by the online metadata sources:
Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

After doing the above change, you only need to Refresh Metadata. A complete Plex Dance is usually not necessary (unless the nonsensical embedded metadata have caused a mismatch).

Awesome. Thanks for the tip!

Just wanted to say, for me the workaround of deleting and readding the library would be tolerable if Plex Sync wasn’t so horribly broken on Android. Currently though, I’m not willing to pay the cost of the workaround if it means days of babysitting my tablet as it struggles to sync the content from a new music library.

God, I was cleaning up the tags on some bootlegs I got over 15+ years ago with Tag&Rename and came across this issue.

Deleting/Adding the library is a monumental pain when you have a large archive of music (e.g. 200GB+). Doing this any time you want to tweak tags is unacceptable.

I’ve tried both refresh metadata and scan library files.

For music, you need the Plex Dance “light”
(omit step 4)

Or you wait a few weeks until the new music code lands. It will make the Dance obsolete – finally.

By “few weeks” do you mean few years?
If it’ll be fixed before Xmas I’ll survive :christmas_tree:

What is this “new music code” you speak of?

Is there anyway for me to make it NOT go online to get the metadata and for it to just utilize the tags on the files? I would like to unmatch the entire library if possible.

I am also having this issue where I’m updating the tags on my FLAC audio files however despite trying to refresh meta data or any of the other refresh options, the new tags are not picked up in Plex.

It’s been a while since July and that quote doesn’t really impact that issue we’re seeing here.
Updated the album of some poorly labeled tracks, but Plex won’t update the info.

Why can’t we have a “refresh metadata” button like we do for TV shows and movies? Just instead of going to the internet to grab stuff, re-read the tags on the files.

If it’s still not updating for you, then I suspect that the whole artist was not converted to use the new music code.

Start by doing ‘Refresh Metadata’ for the whole artist.
(Wait several minutes afterwards)

If that doesn’t change anything, edit your music library, go to the ‘Advanced’ tab and verify that both Scanner and Agent are set to ‘Plex Music’.
If they are, perform the Plex Dance with all albums by that artist.
