Plex Music uses wrong unicode in tags

Server Version#: 1.28.0.5999
Player Version#: Plexamp 4.3.0

First off, I should say that my love for Plex is rekindled, if only as a music server. I’ve been frustrated with the spinning wheel of death on my local network as random movies and TV shows just won’t play, but play perfectly in Jellyfin. Plexamp is a fantastic little app, and it’s become my primary use case for Plex. But I digress.

As a long-time user of Last.fm, I’m frustrated that the Plex Music scanner replaces the unicode U+0027 in tags in favour of U+2019 (among other unicode differences like “quotation mark” vs “left” or “right” quotation mark). Last.fm does not recognize these as the same character and my stats are all over the place. I found this thread from 2020 that is since closed that seemed to indicate a fix was coming, but I’m still experiencing this issue. I’ve reverted my library to Prefer local metadata since my ID3 tags are usually clean. Is this expected behaviour for tags with the Plex Music scanner?

Plex retrieves music metadata from MusicBrainz, if you’re not preferring local metadata. U+2019 is MB’s preferred typography (which follows the Unicode standard).

Interesting. I’ll continue to prefer local metadata then. Stats in last.fm are more important to me than using the Plex Music scanner for metadata.
