Maybe something is getting lost in translation here - when I tell plex to download a file, and I have Prefer downloaded content active, I expect that the downloaded file matches my preferences - not that I get a random language and the ability to select or download subtitles removed.
On the other hand the iPad is set to download “Original” as the only reason I used the download feature is that I don’t have the bandwitdh to stream with original quality - so if there is a difference between the locally downloaded file and the remote library that is something plex did. In any case I doubt there is any difference as when I navigate to play the file from the download screen it has all the options it would have if streamed from the library.
I will add my logs as I was able to get through about 10 movies but now it won’t download anymore. It keeps saying there was an error downloading this file. Doesn’t matter what movie I try now. I have rebooted server and device, cleared cache, etc.
@bearer I’m still not sure what’s going on for you, but something is odd. In your images for the downloaded version it shows “TEXT” for the subtitle. That is the subtitle format. I believe TEXT is for MOVTEXT. Your XML for the video shows SRT formats. So your downloaded copy and what you have on your server don’t match. I’m not sure why.
Can you delete that episode from Downloads and re Download it and get me the android and server logs after doing so. I’d like to check if something is happening during the download to cause this.
I’m hoping the logs show its not an android device if that wasn’t clear enough from my post. Reinstalled, downloaded again, looks to be the same; logs and screenshots zipped up and DM’ed.
@Seakasily Unfortunately, I’m not seeing anything in the logs to indicate why this is happening. The only thing I can think is a weird glitch with that device and the old Android version it has or possibly with the sdcard you are using? Was the card pre-formatted or formatted on another device? Maybe try reformatting it using the device itself and then see if Downloads works.
tried the same with a new macbook air, factory reset, installed plex and tried downlading file. seems unable to complete any download. unless this is somehow tied to my apple id this should be reproducible?
(is the download feature depending on anything icloud related on a mac platform?)
Nope. Are you using the iOS app or the desktop app? If the iOS app, I’m not sure how well Downloads works when running on a Mac. Get me logs from this and I can look. You can also try the desktop app. I know Downloads should work on that.
According to lsof the App store Plex app is using the nsurlsessiond process for downloads, which from what i gather is related to syncing of icloud stuff, not sure if Plex’s use of it is affected by apple id’s or icloud settings though. Seems the Plex for Mac app from plex.tv is running the download in its own Plex process.
However I was not aware there were different apps; I have previously just grabbed the App from the Apple App store. Plex for Mac from plex.tv did appear to successfully download content where the App store one fails.
Any joy was however short lived, next time i open Plex for Mac app I had to sign in again and all downloaded items were gone. I don’t recall having quit the app either, so I guess it quietly crashed and lost its marbles. The oldest logs in ~/Library/Logs/Plex/ and ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Plex Media Server/Logs/
appears to be after i logged in again (and/or maybe after I changed debug level from the default disabled to enabled) after the fact.
I cannot find the “Prefer Downloaded Content” settings in the Plex for Mac app, and it does insist on streaming unless viewed from the downloads screen, so that might be a step backwards.
Also seems like Plex for Mac lack the option to download subtitles for downloaded content. And trying to download subtitles for the same content in the library view fails (downloading the same subtitle using App store app on iPad works, and makes the subtitle available, through the server presumably)
The sharing of synced contents option also seem to be lacking, on the other hand sharing has never worked but it would be nice to have.
All in all, not sure Plex or Mac is progress.
Currently does not work (Macbook Air M1), just keeps downloading the file to 100% in a loop while never storing the file and calling it good - but it used to work, just with the issues of downloading duplicates for just about any inconceivable reason. Randomly crashing seems to be a commonality between the two, but at least the App store one didn’t clear out downloads and sessions when it crashed, before it stopped working that is.
They were on offer a while ago; is it always just you looking at these? Seems I still have the files from March 18th so I’ll pass those along when I’ve added some logs on the clean Macbook as it appears to be slightly different.
That’s strange. I have not seen that reported before.

The Desktop app doesn’t have that setting unfortunately. You need to play from the Download section.

Working for me. Downloading subtitles follows the same rules as the mobile app.
#2. Definitely number TWO. And some of us didn’t give up hope. We just accepted the factual information given by Elan at the time of discussion, which was in short form “It’s by design that the downloading mechanism works that way. We didn’t necessarily have plans on changing anything at this point, but we hope to reevaluate that at a later time as it’s not high on our priority list.”. Something something something.
