iOS allows background downloads, why doesn’t Plex enable it

The downloads feature is severely crippled by the app needing to be open

This is both a significant security vulnerability (leaving your device unlocked for hours) and a basic expected attribute of the download function. Please give some love to iOS downloads. Here is a helpful link.

Agreed - This would make downloads a lot more useful.

Agreed, it’s a nightmare to download episodes on iOS devices

The new download function is garbage compared to the old one. I still wish the old downloader was available as the new one rarely works for me. I’ve done everything I can to troubleshoot it… background downloads would help for sure, but scrapping this new version and going back would solve the issue for me.

BUELLER? BUELLER?

Has anyone heard from a PLEX team member on this? We keep getting new and silly features while something that is a core function for many of us goes untouched. I mean really, who gives a crap about credits detection and auto-loading next episode by comparison? My thumb works great. I’ve been selecting “next episode” all by my lonesome for 15+ years without this magic. What doesn’t work is selecting a show for download and being able to walk away with even the tiniest bit of confidence the download will happen.

This is pretty shabby and should have been a priority years ago.

This would be a dream if possible, specifically as we move to 4k content this is going to be more and more of a problem. I moved to x265 @ 1080p content to maximise the possibly of downloads completing.

Hoping a Plex super-hero could provide some insight, is this a viable approach, if so what timing might be possible?

I just wrestled with my content not completing its download on the latest iPadOS release. I finally realized it was because my iPad Mini would lock after a few minutes of screen inactivity so here I am, tapping my iPad screen every few minutes.

Why on Earth have we not received any acknowledgement from Plex on this?

The download feature is a nightmare in general. No control. Super bad UI. For me: completely useless because whenever I‘d need a download it would take AGES to get it done. It‘s not even possible to simply set a priority what to download first, etc. Show the download speed at least. As if it was rocket science. I bet there is not a single user who thinks this is done even ok. It is just very bad.

The missed old Sync feature was flawed for sure, but just ages ahead of the “new” downloads. They just don’t work, are not reliable, and you can be pretty sure you won’t get your content when you need it.

But it seems Plex doesn’t care the slightest that downloads are not working as they should, be it on iOS or Android.

Still no movement on this? This is ridiculous.

@pyromaster225 This is supposedly on the list for “new experience”. See: Downloads on iOS

Here’s hoping. :crossed_fingers:

Any news on this?
