I just wanted some clarification regarding this statement. I have read everything posted here and as I understand it the only way to import media from a network share is to mount it on the Mac via the finder and add it as a source. Adding sources in Plex as an SMB share will not be a feature in Plex nine. Like a few others I have been using the built in SMB support where I don't have any of my shared volumes mounted. This has been working perfectly for me as I don't always keep my server turned on but I keep Plex running 24/7. Once the server has been turned on Plex has no problem accessing the files on my server. It appears in Plex nine I will always have to be sure the shared volumes are mounted before trying to access them. Please let me know if I am wrong or misunderstood anything.
Keep up the good work. I'm really looking forward to the next release and a lot of the features that have been talked about. Thanks!
For the first release this will be the case (although we'll offer to add them as startup items); in subsequent releases we'll likely add a bit of extra functionality to help make sure they're mounted automatically (a la Bonjour Mounter).
As a side note on this: 0.8.5 is still a major pain in the (you know where) when it comes to this. Everytime a share is not mounted when Plex starts, it resets the settings for that source (e.g. if it has been "movies" it will be set to "none"). Of course now it won't pick up any changes in the source when scraping, unless you manually set the source options again, which results in a complete rescrape of the source.
Since the Mac OS does not offer an easy way to mount network shares during boot without having a user logged in, it's sort of normal that from time to time you just forget to mount a share before firing up Plex. This has happened to me at least a dozen times and it can drive you nuts, trust me.
Not trying to complain here, but my reports on this in the forums (multiple time) have never been picked up. So I just hope this has been addresses one way or another in Alexandria. Just saying. :-)
Dont worry, your library wont be whacked or complain in the same fashion as it does in 0.8.5 when you have forgotten to mount your shares.
Also, Nine will add your shares as a startup object as Elan mentioned. It will do it for you really nicely. So keep your shorts on guys
Haha.... allright then. Keeping my shorts on! :)
In Plex .9, can I handle the case where movies are incorrectly stacked together (i.e. manually tell it not to stack certain movies, or to stack certain ones together)?
My situtation:
I have the 3 Godfather movies with files names as:
Godfather-Part1.mkv
Godfather-Part2-Disc1.mkv
Godfather-Part2-Disc2.mkv
Godfather-Part3.mkv
Plex decided to stack Godfather-Part1.mkv and Godfather-Part3.mkv together.
But did not try stacking the Godfather-Part2 files.
If .9 can’t, then I will probably look into just merging the files.
Thanks.
I would suggest creating a folder for each movie where Godfather Part 1 is in it's own folder, likewise for Godfather Part2 there would be disc1 and disc2.
think this will solve your problem.
Will give that a try... thanks for the suggestion!
I would suggest merging them anyways. That is a bit of a killer stress test for the Plex Nine scanner/agents I believe… they may work but Im not sure. But if you just wait a liiiiittle bit longer you can know for sure
Does the emphasis on "little" mean we can expect this soon, so eager to try this out.
cheers.
Interesting indeed.
In the meantime: Is there any public information available on how to write agents/scanners? I would like to (experiment and) try to write a scanner/agent that traverses .eyetv bundles and one that picks up info from .nfo files.
I second that: if I could write a scanner for the ROMs in Game Launcher, I could release a "Plex Nine" version soon after the full software release.
Can’t wait to have my fingers on this release! Just got the new mini. Need a new plex too
Sounds and looks very cool to me.
Just wanted to follow up that this indeed did help for a lot of the situations I had. I have one or two that still wouldn't stack, but I just merged those together.
Thanks for the suggestion! I actually didn't know you could add a movie by just selecting it's directory until you mentioned it :)
Absolutely not!:)
But when PlexNine is released you will be able to create your own agents and scanners. The new framework is amazing.
I'm afraid this won't be possible in the first release. While third-party devs have full control of the scanning/metadata downloading process, you still have to work with one of the model types provided by Alexandria (Movie, Album, TV Show, Artist, Episode, etc). We haven't defined any game-related models yet, and in the first release or two we'll be focusing on hammering out any bugs that've slipped through before we start expanding the library's capabilities. However, we're definitely interested in adding game support at some point in the Plex/Nine series, and since everything will be public by then we'll be engaging the community to find out exactly what models, fields & relationships will be required :)
That would be great. ! Cant wait to play EyeTV recordings in Plex. That way i wouldnt use EyeTV software on my Mac at all. I schedule all my recording via EyeTV iPhone app.
Too bad :) I'm sure you got valid reasons, though... I suppose there will some sort of SDK once .9 is out? In that case, and if the .9 release is still weeks away, maybe a beta SDK (like Apple does it with beta iOS releases) could be considered for "third party" devs...?
Exactly the way I do it. Scheduling using the iPhone app. I have setup EyeTV to export recordings in iPad format (M4V containers) and use a modified video-plugin (not supported in Plex 9) to index the .eyetv for the M4V files and relevant metadata.
Since the plugin wont work in Plex 9, I would like to be ready for Plex 9 and write a scanner with similar functionality... Guess, we can't have that head start but will have to wait for the "final" release...
Come on already, just release the alpha.
