Plex No Longer Direct Playing 4k HDR Files

Hi All,
In the last month or so I started noticing stuttering playing back on 4K HDR files, even files that had previously played well. After doing a little digging I’ve noticed that I no longer have a Direct Play option on anything 4K HDR or DV encoded and Plex is forcing me to transcode. I recently introduced a gigabit switch so thinking that might be the problem I did a speed test on the shield but it’s getting solid numbers. I’ve also installed VLC and am playing directly through it without any issues.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m at a real loss.

I was able to get the Direct Play option to return but the Plex Server is still attempting to transcode. I noticed that the HDR notification wasn’t showing up on my LG OLED so I disabled Tone Mapping on the server and didn’t get the proper color space.

Now that I think about it, this problem started right around the time I updated to a version with the HDR tone mapping feature.

Dear Plex team, I’m having this exact same issue, and we’d really like a fix for this! HDR films on Plex aren’t telling the TV to switch into HDR mode anymore. It’s very frustrating. I’d like to watch my HDR films in HDR, please. We shouldn’t be forced to watch a tonemapped version if we have an HDR TV!
