Server Version#:DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 5
Player Version#: 1.40.4.8598
I’m wondering if anybody could help me with my problem I no longer can transcode I updated to newest version and it didn’t work so I tried the beta version and it does not work. I have a synology DS 920+
@cerim There could be many reasons Plex does not transcode. You are not providing enough information to help with the diagnosis.
Let’s start with some basics.
Have you disabled video stream transcoding in Settings → Transcoder?
Are the following enabled or disabled (settings → transcoder):
Enable HDR tone mapping
Use hardware acceleration when available
Use hardware-accelerated video encoding
Which Plex client are you using - Plex web, android mobile, etc.?
Which version of the client?
When you play a file and it fails to transcode, do you see an error message? If so, what exactly does it say? Attach a screenshot if possible.
Please do the following:
Stop Plex Media Server and wait one minute.
Start Plex Media Server and wait three minutes for Plex to log the startup sequence.
Re-create the problem - play (or attempt to play) a file that fails to transcode.
Download the server log files (settings → troubleshooting) and upload the entire zip file to this thread. Drag the file into the message window. It will attach at the server location.
Also provide the XML Info for the file you used to re-create the problem. Save the information as a text file or compress it. The forum does not accept xml attachments.
I have not made any changes to the settings when I updated to the newest version 8555 but when I tried to watch some movies on my phone and my friend tried to watch on his phone and on his TV it will simply not transcode. The HW will not show, I also tried to beta version and it didn’t work as well but when I uninstalled Plex and reinstalled it on my Synology, then it has a older version and it works fine and before this 8555 version it also worked.
Workaround is to fall back to an earlier version, but not before 1.31.2 due to database changes.
Synology does not permit direct fallback. You must uninstall the current version first, then install the older version. When uninstalling, choose the “Uninstall Only” option.
Were you trying to transcode HDR media?
There is a problem with HDR tone mapping. With HDR Tone Mapping enabled, Plex Media Server falls back to software decoding. The CPU is not strong enough to perform the task in software, so playback fails.
This affects devices with the Gemini Lake CPUs, such as the DS920+, and Apollo Lake CPUs, such as the DS918+.
Hardware accelerated transcoding of H.264/1080p/SDR video should not be affected (It works OK on my DS918+).
I had to downgrade to 1.40.2.8395 from 1.40.3.8555 on two Synology NAS units (918+ and 920+) for QSV to work on 4K file transcodes. 1080p transcodes work just fine. 4K transcodes do not show the (HW) suffix in the dashboard and max out the CPU. Downgrading to the older version restores hardware transcoding on both systems. That would seem to match the thread linked by @FordGuy61
I have never had any problems transcoding 4k HDR content on my DS 920+ it is just this new update. I don’t know what they have done. I can simply not transcode anymore. I have always used HDR tone mapping and had no issues.
Hi guys, Plex has just released a new update PlexMediaServer-1.40.4.8679-424562606-x86_64_DSM7. Will this update transcode? Or should I skip this update?
Hardware accelerated transcoding of HDR media is now working on my DS918+ (J3455, Apollo Lake CPU). It should also fix the problem for those with Gemini Lake CPUs, such as the J4125 in DS920+.
From the release notes:
(Tonemapping) Hardware Tonemapping failed on intel devices when run on Synology (PM-1667)
