Damn. Didn’t work for me. reverted back to 8.11. No dice.
Same problem here on Firestick “check connection”
And on other Firestick 4k it says “server not powerful enough to play media” Odd because it was just fine playing it a week or so ago!!
Bloomin Plex updates breaking things! This happened last year and wasn’t fixed for months!!
Same problem for me. Loads of movies plex now refuses to play when it had no problem before. If this doesn’t get sorted out I will have to jump ship to something that works.
There is a DNS problem affecting access for many users. You can monitor at https://status.plex.tv/. Do not make any server changes until it is resolved.
Regarding Android TV clients…
There is a problem with the current version of Plex Android / Android TV apps and older versions of Plex Media Server, such as the 1.18.x & 1.19.x releases.
Updating to the current release, 1.23.4.4805 or 1.23.5.4801 (Plex Pass), fixes the problem.
For those unable to update, the workaround is to disable secure connections.
- Server: Settings → Network → Secure Communications = Disabled.
- App: Settings → Advanced → Allow insecure communications = Always.
I was hopeful, but this doesn’t resolve the issue with Firestick and Netgear router versions of Plex. Still a dead dog. Plex seems more interested in being an IPTV service than addressing concerns in their core audience. This problem is way long overdue to be fixed. Plex does not have a support team… they slough off problems to the forums and act like that’s “support”.
Same issue on all my Fire Stick and Roku devices. PC/web and xbox clients work 100%
Extremely annoying, and didn’t want to have to buy a bunch of Apple TV’s right now.
If using your ISP’s DNS, try using 8.8.8.8 (Google), 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or other public DNS server.
Do you have a pihole, pfsense, or any other such firewall / DNS server in your network?
If so, see the DNS Rebinding section of How to Use Secure Server Connections regarding the plex.direct domain.
Please attach a set of server logs (Settings → Troubleshooting → Download Logs).
Please attach the log file from the FireStick. See Android, Android TV, Fire TV, Portal Logs for information on pulling Android TV log files.
@FordGuy61 - Short of hiring an IT person, none of this is going to happen. My router has a built in plex server (I think the only one out there that does). It should just work… and it used to until we got new updates from Plex apps. That means nothing else has changed. The error is in the apps themselves… not the ISP’s DNS or other rabbit hole that strays outside of the obvious source of the problem.
Yes, it should.
Yes, it did.
Never said it wasn’t.
I was hoping to find a work-around to get things working again. Modifying secure communications settings has worked for some. For others, modifying DNS settings helped.
If you want to try and find a work-around we can do so. We may or may not be successful.
If you want to wait for an update from Plex or Netgear that is fine too. Your choice.
Thanks FordGuy… I’ll give it a shot. I just don’t have a lot of time and frankly NOT hanging out on my plex server has opened up a whole bunch of time to do more productive stuff.
I had the same issue and fixed it as following :
1- Force application to stop (on Amazon FireTV : Parameters/Applications/Plex)
2- Erase application datas and cache (same path)
3- Re boot FireTV Stick
You will have to resynchronize your account on https:\plex.tv/link
And then it should work again…! Enjoy !
(But please, do not ask me why it didn’t work anymore, after working fine for years !!!)
I’m guessing you don’t have a Netgear Router serving plex. I followed your steps and at the end I’m still getting “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.” In short, nothing has changed.
PS: If it helps anyone following this thread: Plex App on Roku and IPAD pro is working fine. This is isolated to the latest update of the PLEX app on the Firestick. Also not working on Samsung S21 Ultra 5G, Kindle Fire Tablet and Google Nexus Tablet. This is very clearly an Android isolated issue… not just associated with the Firestick. Didn’t seem to matter if I got the App from the Amazon store or the Google Play store.
I’m having the same exact issue. Netgear Router, Firestick 4K, was working fine for months, then updates came through on the Firestick, and now I get the same message every time I try to watch a video: “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.” It works the same as it ever has on my iPhone and computer.
Going on two and a half months since I was able to use it correctly. Very frustrating.
Who can help?

Thank you for your post. I see that it’s an issue that Plex must be aware of, but they just released an update that doesn’t address the problem. I also looked at the status page you posted and I don’t see where they are even working on fixing this issue.
I’ve posted the logs. Is there any movement on this at all? Plex employees?
Same issue works on computer not on fire cube. The ip streaming works but mycloud plex is broken.
Does anyone have this issue and is NOT using the Netgear Router Plex server. I’m trying to isolate the source of the problem. I happen to have two Plex servers and my PC based server is working fine with my Android devices. The problem in my case is the Netgear Router . In light of that, I’ve opened a support ticket on Netgear to address the problem. We’ll see where that goes.
Still nothing? Can someone from Plex deal with this?
Same issue for me, latest plex server on Ubuntu + FireTV stick, not using netgear.
“Cannot connect” when trying to play media.
re-installed same issue.
Same issue across multiple android devices but not on the mac.
Tried the 6.12 version but that’s crashing a lot.
Server Version: 4.29.2
Same issue with me. Plex was working fine literally last week, got the notification for an update and decided to do it. Now nothing will play regardless of if it’s h265 or h264. Luckily the Plex addon for Kodi still works fine so that’s being used until the app works again.
Firestick 4k
Server version 1.18.6.2368
