PLEX App on Fire TV Stick error message “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.“

Apologies in advance if I have posted this in the wrong area of the forum but in my defence I’m new to this lark! I have never not been able to solve a technical issue like this before, as the solution nearly always exists in the forums, but I have been completely stumped with this one since May 21…

I have a WD MyCloud Home (NAS) that comes with PLEX Media Server pre-installed. You simply enable it and then configure it on the PLEX website - et voila! I use it to play media on my TV through the PLEX App on Amazon Fire TV Stick. Both the Fire TV Stick and the NAS are hard wired to the internet router via an ethernet switch.

Everything was working well until I updated the PLEX App on Fire TV Stick to version 8.19.4.26517 in May this year.

Following the update I was still able to view my media using the PLEX App but was unable to play them. When I tried to play them the yellow circle whirred and then I got the error message “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”

The connection, cables and hardware were tested and no fault was found. I then successfully accessed the WD MyCloud Home from my PC (via Wifi connection) and was able to play my films once logged into the PLEX website. It also works fine via the PLEX App on another TV in our house (Hisense TV) via wireless connection. The issue is not resolved if I use a Wifi connection with the WD MyCloud Home rather than ethernet cable.

Since the issue first presented itself I have scoured the forums and tried every fix that has been suggested, from changing settings within the PLEX App to disabling and re-configuring the PLEX Media Server, all without success.

I have since updated the Fire TV Stick PLEX App to 8.21.1.27073(43c4486d) but the issue persists.

I have raised an incident with WD - they have analysed the diagnostic reports on my WD MyCloud Home and found no inconsistencies.

Is there anyone out there who can help me please?!

Plex Media Server version?

There is a problem with current versions of Android/Android TV apps and older versions of Plex Media Server. The Android apps are rejecting the security certificate from the server.

Users running Plex Media Server versions 1.18.x and 1.19.x are definitely affected. The problem may happen with other Plex Media Server versions (I don’t have a list of all affected releases).

The problem is visible in the Android client log: [FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tls @ 0xc35efba0] Peer certificate failed verification

Updating Plex Media Server to a current release fixes the problem.

If you cannot update Plex Media Server, such as some running Plex on WD & Netgear NAS, the workaround is to disable secure connections.

Plex Media Server: Settings → Network → Secure Connections = Disabled.

Android app: Settings → Advanced → Allow Insecure Connections = Always

Note: You will lose Plex Web access via app.plex.tv, which uses https, when you make this change. You will have to connect to your Plex server via http://nas_ip_address:32400/web (ex: http://192.168.1.2:32400/web ).

Thank you @FordGuy61 for your helpful response, which was very much appreciated. You certainly deserve your ninja status!

I followed your advice and am now able to play media again - woop, woop!

For info, PLEX Media Server version installed on WD MyCloud Home is Version 1.18.6.2350.

Of note is that I have tried doing this before without success but was logged into the PLEX website and PLEX Fire TV Stick App at the same time (I’m not sure why this would make a difference but seems to). In this instance I changed the settings on the PLEX Media Server, logged out and then changed settings on the PLEX App.

Thanks again @FordGuy61.
