I have tried everything, and I am not having any luck with Private Internet Access to do remote access. It either goes red that it’s not able to remote access, or it stays green and looks like it is, but the server is offline. Once I disconnect from PIA, it will work correctly. The posts I have been able to find have not helped, and are dated. I was wondering if anyone had any luck with the configurations of PIA to get it to work correctly. I also have a subscription to Nord, which does not seem to have any options to allow Plex, but if someone knows a way, that could help.
Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Private Internet Access version 2.4 build 05574
Not familiar with PIA myself.
Looks like you’ve only setup the exception to bypass the VPN for a shortcut/link to the Plex Media Server app – not the actual exe. Not sure if that’ll make a difference…
I’m not exactly sure how you’re trying to connect but I did a quick mobile test from my iPhone. I connected to my PIA account and then to my Plex server at home and watched a TV show. No problem.
Tooling around with this today, I found it better to do it the other way, do not exclude Plex, but include the apps you want to have in PIA.
So ‘All Other Apps’ button uses Bypass VPN, and then add any apps or software that you have and select them to ‘Use VPN’
This seems to allow for remote access for Plex. Since my server only runs plex and 3 other automation software systems, it was pretty easy to do this, might be different for your setup.
I use PIA on MacOS but from what I understand what Tom says is correct. Also if you use this computer for Admin the browser should also be included. Making it a non default browser if you open using a bookmark with https
This was a useful post. The only way I can get plex remote to work is to use Split tunneling in PIA and make all apps Bypass VPN but make torrent client, etc. use VPN only. Remote then works flawlessly.
Trying to create an exclusion to Bypass VPN for Plex Media Sever never worked properly for me.
