Foolish me. I did not read the notes on DSM-7 and the app provided through Synology. Now I cannot run it. I read that I had to download the version directly from Plex, however, I am not sure which one to download because it seems it need to know what chip I have.
The options to download for Synology (DSM 7) are this…
Intel 32-bit
Intel 64-bit
ARMv8
ARMv7 (x13 and x14 series NAS)
ARMv7 (x15, x16, x17 and x18 Series NAS)
Which one do I need? Can I just do a Manual Install over the Synology Package Center app or do I need to uninstall that first and then install which ever one I need above?
So is my DS1618+ the same? down load. When I looked at general information, it said that it had an Intel Atom C3538 CPU and I don’t know if it is 32 or 64 bit.
I wish that I had seen the article that you put on here BEFORE I started this. Figured this would be a rather quick upgrade for both the DSM and Plex, but it turning out to be larger than that.
Looking through this, I see that it says that the app & the data need to be on the same storage volume. I have movies and pictures and assume that this is the data you mean.
Okay. So I know what to download. But, because I didn’t see these instructions before I downloaded the Package Center Plex, do I have to uninstall it first or install over it. Then next if they have to go together (the app and the data), can I uninstall PLEX and manually installed the download to where I have the data? The reason for this question is that I don’t know where the Plex app is installed. I see two Plex folders in the file manager. One is under homes, plex and the other has its own folder under the NAS name. Both are on volume 1 (5.3TB) and my videos and pictures are on volume 4 (1TB). If I move the pictures to volume 1, do they just need to be placed as a subfolder for one of the Plex folders or do they just need to be on the same volume? Sorry for all of the questions.
The Plex installation process under DSM 7 will place the app and data folder on the same volume.
If the app & data folder had been on separate volumes when running DSM 6, the installer would mention it. That would be Scenario 1 in the Install & Migration steps (linked below).
If the installer did not mention it, then the app & data folder were already on the same volume, and you would follow Scenario 2.
Well, I completely uninstalled PMS from the DS. I downloaded the one from Plex-TV and installed it. Says the installed version is 1.24.0.4897-7000. When I started it up, it could not see any of my current folders with photos and videos, so from within Plex, I removed all of them. My Photos and videos are just fine, but they do not show currently when I run the Plex app on the DS. I should add here that I have two DS systems, both with Plex on them. When I open the Plex app on the DS1817, I see and can access those photos and videos that are on the DS1618+. The DS1618+ is for family photos and videos and the DS1817 is my company photos and videos. Now when I click on the DS1817, it tells me that ‘This page is empty’ and considering that I removed all of the libraries, it would be right. I tried to add a photo library and it shows that the folders are added but there is nothing. I added a folder that is labeled ‘DigMyPics’ which has several subfolders under it. But if I try to scan the files, it comes right back with NO photos. and is says “Photos” is empty. Photos is the name of the library. What am I doing wrong?
I am still trying to make this work, but it just is not working. I removed Plex COMPLETELY from the DS. Even the metadata and cleared all folders related to Plex. I then created a single shared folder called “Plex”. Installed Plex from the Plex-TV downloads. It went through all fo the steps again without any error messages. Then I added a simple shared folder “TestPlexPhotos” containing just a few photos. Scanned and it came back right a way, but still is says “TestPlexPhotos” is empty.
I may have figured it out. Because there were too many photos and videos in my company folders, I did create that one shared folder. But I did not complete the system internal user settings. When I did this, the new pictures started to show up.
Now, I am in the process of add the old libraries back in and it seems to be scanning fine.
So, in conclusion, I believe that in order for the NEW Plex to work on DSM 7, I had to remove EVERYTHING related to Plex including all metadata. I double checked the DS via SSH to make sure everything was gone include all folders. Then I created a new folder called “Plex”, installed the new Plex server app onto the DS and added libraries. I will add one more reply to this when/if all libraries have been successfully re-added.
I think you jumped the gun and panicked / got frustrated and nuked it when it was not necessary.
What you describe here is a simple permissions issue.
DSM 7 is VERY strict about permissions (it’s Linux based).
DSM 6 used username Plex which was a normal “user”
DSM 7 uses ‘system internal user’ PlexMediaServer and requires a couple extra steps (because of the changes Synology made in DSM 7)
Some users, usually those who broke the DSM 6 ACLs, need to correct that in DSM 7 by using the “Action” in File Station → “Convert to Windows ACL”. This is a poorly named option. It should be named “Repair Synology ACL”.
After ACLs are repaired, adding “System Internal User” PlexMediaServer grants the needed access for Plex to run.
I beg your pardon. I did NOT jump the gun. I followed ALL of what you described above plus every article that I could find on the subject. And it was NOT a simple permissions issue.
That only happened on the last folder that I created NEW. I used he system internal user on ALL of the previous shared folders and they would NOT scan.
Also, when I looked at the previous folders and it stated that they were not ACL compatible, I WENT to repair the ACLs and that option was grayed out. I spent hours on this before I finally decided to ‘nuke it’.
I have NOT lost anything except time and while frustration was high, I had to finally decide to do something outside the box before the end of the weekend as I have work to do starting tomorrow morning and needed my folders operational.
Now here is a question. When adding new photos from a folder that numerous subfolders underneath, is there some kind of limit the depth of the folders. I ran into errors while it was trying to add a library, so I removed it and started with a rather simple folder system. Does this forum allow attaching jpg?
Is it also possible that the new Plex can error or fail to scan if there are just too many photos or videos? The reason for this question is that it seems that Plex fails if I add a library that has numerous sub-folders and thousands of pictures in them, but if I add a couple sub-folders at a time, it seems to be working just fine.
You took my statement as a challenge which it was not how intended. I made my reply based on this, your statement where you felt you had to remove everything in a seemingly harsh and rather drastic step when it wasn’t.
To answer your question
The maximum path length on Linux, inclusive of the DSM overhead is 1024 characters which includes a terminating NULL character,
It begins with /volumeX (where X is 1-99).
Assuming an average name length of 30 characters (directory or file names including extensions), you have an effective maximum depth of approximately 30 directoriess deep.
Unlike Windows, there is no limit or performance penalty, to how many entries may be in a directory.
With the right source media to scan, and all the metadata it could possibly generate, it can easily create 500GB of metadata (which we’ve seen here on Synology NAS systems already in this DSM 6 → DSM 7 migration effort).
Good Morning! The DS and PMS seems to be progressing but, extremely slow. None of my subfolders go any deeper than 5. However, there could be thousands of pictures. Would it be typical for it to take a long time to digest them? Could this be related to some issue with the DS?
Now, as a side note to above. I rebooted the DS and now things seem to be running a lot faster. Not sure why. I am in the final stage of adding all of the files back into Plex on this DS. Hopefully we can close this issue once they have been scanned in.
I am going to read more before I upgrade the DS1618+ to DSM 7.
