Plex not acknowledging all folders or files added to a library folder

What setting or function needs adjusted or changed to correct the following issue?

Problem description example:
A Library called TV Shows is created.
A folder containing 111 sub folders (i.e. different tv shows) is chosen and added to this library folder.
Each of these 111 subfolders holds multiple avi files, (up to 100 or more).
After Plex completes its library update only 54 of the 111 sub folders are shown AND only a small amount of the files within those 54 sub folders are shown instead of ALL the files.
Example: (one folder alone has 28 seasons and 482 episodes yet only 1 season and 23 episodes are
listed.)

Plex will not acknowledge ALL the sub folders and ALL the files within those sub folders.

1.) It is NOT a naming convention or format type; Plex recognizes some files but not all
2.) All files use the same naming convention: (example: 0205 - star trek blue.avi)
3.) All files are the same type, all files are named the same way, all files are located on the same hard
drive, and all Plex settings that I have access to are properly set.

Plex will not acknowledge all of my files and it should.

So… what setting is wrong and in need of change?

It IS a naming issue:

If it was a naming issue, then Plex would not recognize ANY of my files. Since it recognizes some but not all files then naming
convention is not the reason. I ask again…what Plex setting is in need of change?

There is no way that this program would require me to rename 20, 000 files just so the program will work. If it did I would never ever use of buy it.

I must say this could be true if you were the one who programmed PLEX. But I’m sure you did not. PLEX is not the brains, you are. You must organize the files in a way PLEX understands. Sure, you say some are found, but some aren’t. You come here for help. We are helping. You need to listen to us, or at least, consider the information given can help you fix your issue.
Try it on just one show and see. If it works, try on second show. I know 20,000 files is alot to rename but there are programs out there that can do it in minutes(FileBot).

Here are the rules - again:

Particularly - and absolutely:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows

Here is what Plex expects to see:

Episode Names are Optional, Season Folders can be single digit, but stray off the path of ‘enlightenment’ to produce exactly what you’re getting - unpredictable/unexpected/unwanted behavior of your TV Shows.

Use the force, Luke…
or suffer…

FileBot - in my signature - will change your life, Man.
It’s the Plex File Name Easy Button.

As I stated…there had to be a resolution to this issue in the manner I sought and I found it. It worked and I did not have to rename any files.

…Glad it worked out for you.

If you would not mind, could you please share how you fixed the issue? I, like you - know that it is NOT a naming issue or Plex would not see ANY of my files as I name them all in the exact same way - it sees some of them and not others. I have been trying to figure out what the difference is between the ones that show up and the ones that do not - since you have apparently figured it out I would be much obliged if you would share your findings. Thank you!

That doesn’t matter if it is the wrong way.

If you still have issues, please share your actual file and folder names.

If this was caused by a wrong way of naming files - then how come some of the files show up and some do not??? As I stated, files, folders, they are all named in the exact same way

Folders:

Main folder name is for example Supernatural - folders inside that folder are named Season 01, etc.

Actual files are named

Supernatural Season 14 Episode 01 - Stranger in a Strange Land.mp4 (this file shows up)
Supernatural Season 14 Episode 02 - Gods and Monsters.mp4 (this file does not show up)

If what you are saying is true - there is no logical reason WHY one file shows up in that folder but the other one is missing - neither should show up.

This is the wrong way and yes, Plex may tolerate these wrong names for a while, but they will eventually fail.

Name your files like shown in the linked articles and it will work (usually).

There is software, which can help you rename your files. Filebot

not sure if I remember what the
problem was but, this is how my system is set up:

all my tv shows are in a folder called TV shows...with sub

folders by the name of each show.

each show is named in this format: 0101 - show name, 0102 -

show name and so on…

I chose "other videos" as the location for the tv shows...

and it works. Plus all of my files are in avi format

If I chose the TV Shows settings...it wanted the files in a

specific format like season X episode X - show name.

wasnt going to rename all my shows...so this way worked for me.

see if that works..... if you have to rename all your files,

there is a program called Bulk Rename which works great.

This worked perfectly! Thank you!!! Now the only problem is that I can’t get it to browse by folder - and scrolling through episodes to get to the one you want is a pain. After not using Plex for YEARS, I find that it is just as uncaring about what their users want as it always has been… They never think thing through from the user end.

not sure about the browsing by folder issue. I scan/update my libraries whenever I make changes. And I make sure the app and the one on the TV are both
the same version. On my TV, I see all of my libraries, and when I enter a library, say TV Shows, I have a choice between seeing all files or browse by
folder. I choose browse by folder and it shows all the sub folders for each show. Pick my sub folder and all of my shows within are listed. If I make
a change on my server, it wont show up in the TV app until I scan/update that library.

I have seen Plex act up and not show all my files…usually the standard things like clearing its cache, re-starting the TV app helps. Maybe your issue
lies within the Plex App settings. If you were to send me your servers settings, I could compare them to mine and see if there are differences. Just make
sure you dont send any secret data like ip addresses and such. send it scorpioet2@neo.rr.com. I’m willing to help.
