Plex not automatically detecting Subtitle files

Plex is not autodetecting external subtitle files in .srt or .ass format

I only have one show that’s auto detecting files, noragami

literally all my other shows are not autodetecting subtitles

and when I say autodetecting, I mean that when I click on subtitle options I’m only presented with the internal MKV file’s English subtitles that I do not want

my external Japanese subtitles are not being detected, I have to add them manually

I name my files exactly like the plex naming scheme wants:

example:

I’m currently watching on my desktop Windows 10 PC but the problem persists on all platforms including my Android TV and Android cellphone

The server is ran on a Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop

The subtitles used to work fine but I noticed today that none of them are working

so far I’ve tried to:
restart server
check for plex updates
change subtitle burn in settings
convert subtitles between .ass or .srt
remove show from plex, do a library scan, then readd the show
use plex agent to change the naming of the show from Japanese to English
Tried using japanese instead of english

I’d like for the shows to keep their japanese name
and yes I am intentionally using japanese subtitles not English subtitles

It would be a huge pain to have to go to my file directory and add the subtitles manually everytime I want to watch a show

especially if I’m watching from my Android TV I’d need to get up and walk to my office to access the samba share to share the subtitles manually

I’m unclear on your issue? Are you saying that Plex is not detecting the Japanese subtitles so they don’t show up in the drop down?

I don’t understand what you mean here. What are you adding subtitles manually and how is this different from normally adding the file into the folder?

jpn or ja would both be supported.

jp isn’t a valid language code.

The file names and folder organization are flawless.
BUT only if you added the exact folder /Anime to your plex library.
Not even one folder level above or below of that.

After adding external subtitles to existing library items, you need to perform “Refresh Metadata” – either of the whole library or of the whole tv show. Refreshing single seasons or single episodes might not work
