Suddenly plex doesn't detect external subtitles - nor downloads them from opensubtitles

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2701
Player Version#: on all devices

I’ve been using and loving plex for many years now. This is a first.

Plex won’t detect any external subtitle files - it simply ignores them entirely, showing “None”.
It also doesn’t download them automatically from opensubtitles.

These are for example .SRT files with the exact same name as the video file, in the very same directory.

I am assuming this has something to do with the agents settings?
(I recently set up opensubtitles on this machine, so this might be related…)

Can someone please help me out on this??
Many thanks!!

AFAIK you need to add the language before the file extension, even if the file name is identical, or Plex won’t see it. So “video-filename.srt” is not enough, but “video-filename.en.srt” will usually work.

Hi, and thanks for the advice.

I’ve also tried it with the .en. before, but it didn’t make a difference.

Also, I suspect this is not really an issue, since using the identical filename has been working for years now without an issue - it will just appear as “unknown”, instead of “English”…?

You don’t need that, but it is desirable.

Please show your (complete) folder structure as well.
I can already see from your file name that the chance of this working in Plex is wonky.
With tv shows, you need to use a subfolder for each season, if you need external subtitles.
And you need to use properly named files in general https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

hi, thanks for the advice

this must be the only files I have not properly named…

I always respect the file naming and subfolders…

was just unlucky enough to show the one didn’t… sorry about that

anyways, in the end I’ve seem to have found a solution… at least one that’s hasn’t failed as of yet…

I refreshed the metadata of the entire system, re-analysed everthing and emptied all trash, and refreshed the metadata again.

This seems to have done the trick for now.

In case something comes up, I’ll try to report this back here.
