Plex not naming the subsequent episodes of multi episode files properly

I have a bunch of Paw Patrol episodes which are single file but contain 2 episodes each. I have them named Paw.Patrol.S01E01-E02.mp4. But you can see in the screenshot, the 2nd episodes are using the 1st episode name. Thetvdb shows the episode names correctly so not sure why they aren’t pulling properly since the video is being labeled episode 2.

Forgot to attach screenshot

That isn’t how thetvdb names the episodes (“Paw Patrol”, not “Paw.Patrol”), and it doesn’t follow the Plex naming convention. If you don’t follow the naming convention things can work sometimes and then not work at all.

Plus, since those are mp4 files, there may be embedded meta-data causing problems. Did you record these yourself?

I can’t believe I forgot about renaming the show properly. So then I renamed everything properly, and they are in the proper season -series format: for instance:

Paw Patrol
 - Season 01
 - - Paw Patrol - S01E01-E02 - Pups and the Kitty-tastrophe.mp4

And I did a Refresh All with Plex for the library. Nothing changed though. The mp4 files do not have embedded metadata either.

So in Plex, for the 2nd episode of the previously mentioned file, it recognized it as the 2nd episode and the thumbnail and episode number are correct, but the episode title, episode description are not pulled properly. Below is the log for the scanner for episodes 1 and 2 for season 1 to see how it is pulling metadata, and I see the thumbnail and local media but for some reason it isn’t changing the episode name or description.

I don’t know if it will help, but you might have to do the Plex Dance, since those files have already been scanned.

For reference here,

  1. move all files for the show out of ‘sight’ of plex
  2. update library (not ‘force update’ not ‘Refresh all’)
  3. empty trash
  4. clean bundles
  5. double check naming schema and move files back
  6. update library

I’ll give it a shot!

Thanks, this fixed it.

So the Plex Dance fixed the problem, but then it eventually came back where my 2nd episodes are tagged with the 1st episode metadata. I really hope the Plex team comes up with a better solution for multiple episode files.

These are mp4 files. I bet that your file for episode 1 contains an embedded ‘Title’ tag which contains, well, the title of that episode. Since it is the same file for episode 2, the Title tag is also the same. And Plex will duly use this ‘Title’, unless you tell it otherwise:

Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.

Afterwards, perform the Plex Dance with affected episodes.
