Plex not picking up some random files

Server Version#: 1.13.9.5456

Plex sometimes fails to pick up random files even though it gets similar files. For example, here’s a show that’s all in one folder (this is folder view) and an episode is not being read.

How do I prevent this from happening? Scanning doesn’t pick it up, and I can’t seem to manually match it.

How are the files named?

Name of show optional year - S??E?? - Episode name.extension. This is how you should name the file. If you are naming the file properly, sometimes this happens to me too, what I have to do is remove the file from the server, put it somewhere it is not scanning, and scan and update so the one it didn’t pick up disappears from the list. Then put it back, and scan again, do not under any circumstances go into the series until the scan is fully complete and the icon for the series is back to normal. This fixes this for me.

The files are all named similarly:

Bitten S01E01 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E02 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E03 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E04 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E05 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E06 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E07 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E08 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E09 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E10 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E11 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E12 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv
Bitten S01E13 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv

I was afraid I might have to do the file location dance. I wish that wouldn’t have to happen. :frowning:

They should really be like this:

Bitten - S01E01 - 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD.mkv

And yep, you will probably need to do the dance…

Plex picked up the other episodes just fine. Even if it couldn’t parse the filename, it should still show up in Plex unmatched.

Name convention is for reference only. Personally I prefer to have the name of the episode itself, but in reality minimum needed for it to work would be:

Bitten S01E01.mkv

That being said, I like to name the files myself like this:

Bitten (2014) - S01E01 - Summons.mkv

This allows me to quickly see what the episode is and the year and everything really about the episode. Type of ripped file, quality of Audio and video, just not that important to me.

This is all personal opinion however, and it was just a frame of reference to make sure he is naming the files properly.

The Dance… That’s the meat in my post.

Havok

I prefer not renaming stuff so that I can easily keep seeding. Additionally I almost never look at the files themselves – that’s what Plex is for!

Hello all,

Ok so I’m hoping this is me doing something stupid, but for some reason I am unable to get PMS to find certain files.

Example 1:

I have a custom category called “Documentaries”. Within it are two of the David Attenborough series, and one single file in the root of the Documentaries folder itself. None of the media files in this category will display in the PMS console. I have tried a Deep Scan, tried renaming the folders they are in, no matter what I do they will not apper. Attached below is a screenshot showing the folder location and path (top left), the scan log (bottom left), the PMS (top right) and the PMS in folder view (bottom right). The PMS will find the folders in that directory, but none of the files. Any ideas why?

Example 2:

In a similar scenario, I have the default category of “TV Shows”. Within it are several folders, all of which are being picked up, except for one, the “Top Gear” show. Again, if I look at folder view, I am able to see the Top Gear folder, but nothing stored within it. I can also see it being picked up in the log.

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m fairly new to Plex so feel free to explain things like I’m a three year old.

You’re probably better off starting your own thread instead of trying to hijack this one. It sounds like a separate issue.

If you are not going to follow the Plex naming conventions for your media files, then you will run into these issues, sometimes you can get away with it and sometimes not.

Agreed, try moving them off the server’s location, scan and make sure they are not there, then rename the files according to Plex’s Naming convention, and try again.

remove this should work…
720p BluRay DD5.1 x264-VietHD

Except Plex picked up all of the other samely named episodes of the season just fine. It understands a lot more formats than just the suggested naming convention.

Anyway, I solved it by moving the file elsewhere, scanning, emptying the trash, putting the file back, and then scanning again. Annoying, but it worked just fine. The issue isn’t the naming.
