Problems with Plex not recognizing new files

This is also happening to me! Nothing changed in my drives or the plex category that I created. I was able to add some on Saturday and then when I added a few more later on, they did not show.

I tried removing them in finder (mac) and then readding them, no dice
I also tried making a new folder and adding them there and then editing the file location for that particular category, and still nothing.

Same symptom doesn’t establish the same issue. This could be anything from poor file naming to … you name it. You’ll need to provide some actual details if you want users to help you.

It has nothing to do with file names. For example, I added a few new episodes of Alone. I checked the files names with a previous season (which are showing up in plex just fine) and the file names for the recent episodes followed the same naming scheme, and nothing shows up.

As far as movies, a file doesn’t need specific file naming. They show up regardless and if the naming isn’t perfect the ‘match’ doesn’t auto load (can always force the match)

So it has nothing to do with the naming for me.

I’ve moved this to its own thread – please don’t hijack other threads.

As for your issue… when it comes to Plex, file names matter. As the linked support article points out, Plex will actively ignore certain files, file types. The same is true if you try to add a file that’s named like a tv-episode to a movie library.

TL;DR:
Mind sharing your specific folder structure / file names based on the folder that’s linked with the library, down to the actual video files?
Bad names work until at some point the won’t.

Also… is your server actually running on that Mac or are you only managing the files through Finder? What version of Plex Media Server do you have installed (and if it’s not actually running on your Mac… what’s the actual platform)?

Hey Tom.

Like I said, I was updating a few tv series with new episodes. The new episodes follow the same naming scheme as the previous episodes (all of which showed up in plex just fine). The new episodes won’t even show up at all! Naming is 100% accurate based on the previous episodes file names.

Additionally, new movies won’t show up. I tried everything.

Let me know when there’s something new.

Alone, seasons 6 and 7 work fine.

here is a file naming for a season 6 episode:

alone.s06e01.720p.web.h264-tbs.mkv

Here is season 8 (does not show up in my library)

Alone.S08E01.720p.WEB.h264-BAE.mkv

Here is the library category file directory

/Volumes/1.) TV (current)/1d.) TV (docu)

Additionally, I just tried deleting a library category from the left hand margin, I thought I would just readd it and it would help.

I clicked ‘delete’, confirmed I wanted to delete the library, and it hasn’t left the left hand margin list! I even cleared all browser history, re logged in, and it’s still there

I then clicked on to it, saw its contents, tried watching a movie, and now it says

“Playback Error, content is unavailable”

^ which makes sense because I deleted the library category. But why is still showing up in my library list?

I’ve deleted categories before and it was gone (as it should be) but now it just hangs out and doesn’t go away? it will show the titles but won’t play them? Something is going on here…

could be a corrupted database… if so you should see related errors in your server logs
If that’s the case, you can attempt to repair it. If the repair doesn’t succeed you could try restoring a backup of your database (created during a scheduled maintenance) – though depending on how long the issue exists, this could mean you’ll lose some recent changes/updates.

May we have some DEBUG log files ZIPs please?

This sounds like a permissions problem. Those would show in the logs.

We can’t help troubleshoot what we can’t see.

Sorry :man_shrugging:

I went in and deleted the database file. Had to rebuild the library, but I’ve done that a few times in past so it only took 8 minutes. And most of my megadata and whatnot has already reloaded and we’re back baby! Thanks for the help Tom!

I’m having the same issue. This occurred after the last update
Current :Server Version#: 1.23.6.4881-e2e58f321
Current Player Version#: 1.23.6.4881

Auto updating stopped for me after upgrading my synology to dsm7 and subsequent dsm7 version of plex. it worked perfectly fine before, but now I have to manually update libraries
