Plex not playing music on first generation Echo devices

Same model as mine that doesn’t work

The thing is we know Plex developers have monitored this thread and acknowledged the issue. It would be nice if they would formally address the issue, one way or the other. What is causing the issue, what it would entail to fix it, determination if they plan to make any corrections. Just tell us.

The lack of communication is the frustrating part. I traded in my old Echoes and got new ones. Sucks that I had to do that, but we don’t even know if they will fix the issue yet.

This is affecting me too. First gen Echo, it was working fine for years and I was using it every day to play music from Plex. Then one day it stopped and despite hours of troubleshooting, updating Plex, restarting everything, etc I still have the same symptom as everyone else. I ask it to play something, it says “playing xyz” and then… nothing. I strongly suspect Amazon updated something and broke it because until this started I had not updated Plex in over a year. I wish they wouldn’t keep messing with things, I don’t care about new features, I just want the stuff that already works to keep working.

One of the developers was able to reproduce the problem with a 1st gen Echo. We are looking into the cause.

Thank you Moviefan. At least we know it is an active investigation. Many of us are curious ex developers and would be interested in knowing what happened. Just saying …

Can report it is happening for me, too, only on my 1st Gen Echo (working fine on Echo Flex and 2nd Gen Echo). I have seen discussion of this problem on reddit as well.
Glad to see the dev team is looking into it now.

Plex just updated to Version 1.24.5.5173. Still no Plex streaming to Amazon 2nd gen Echo’s running as a stereo pair with an echo sub when asked by Alexa, even though she says it’s playing.

@anon18523487 any word on resolving this issue? Even, if the dev team will not resolve it for whatever reason, please let the users know so we can decide what our next move is. Some folks have opted to buy new devices, but I would prefer to keep using my fully functional gen 1 device if at all possible.

It “seems” like this issue is an API change that was made at some point that broke the Alexa app for first gen devices, which “seems” pretty fixable, and you mentioned the devs were able to reproduce.

However, this limbo is highly frustrating, particularly for us users that use this feature frequently… If you need me to do testing or want me provide any further details, I’m happy to do so, just let me know what you need.

Please respond. Thanks!

Fully updated gen 1 echo fails with fully up to date Plex on Windows

An Echo show 8 works on same plex account but different Alexa account.

Most of my music is Flac encoded but also fails on mp3s

Excellent to hear it’s reproduce-able by devs. Lets hope for quick fix.

I guess Amazon have different API / behaviour on old devices.

I do want the end to end lossless flac streaming to work please

+1 for this issue on Gen 1 Echo.
Echo finds the audio file, reports it is going to play it, and then just doesn’t.

Just trialling Plex Pass and this happening on my first gen Echo.

Linking the reddit for this also: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/q0wv7c/music_no_longer_plays_on_first_generation_amazon/

There are no model numbers on 2nd generation Echo’s, just a rubber bottom. There are model numbers on 2nd generation Echo Dots. Still no luck getting Alexa to stream. Well, some. Alexa will play PLEX music through ONE 2nd generation Echo or Echo Dot, but not through two as a stereo pair w/an Echo Sub as before. Just silence. Still where I started. Ask Alexa to play through the stereo pair of Echo’s with a stereo sub, she knows the system, says it’s playing, but nothing is. With one Echo or Echo Dot (2nd gen) Alexa can get Plex music to fire right up. I did everything you can do as far as having all the devices deactivated and reactivated from scratch, created the pair, added the sub, redid the Alexa skill, etc., etc., nothing makes any difference or helps. What I didn’t know is that it would have still worked with one Echo or Echo Dot, but not the stereo pair any longer. All other services Spotify, Prime, Pandora work fine with the stereo pair and sub. Left a complaint update with the Alexa skill in the app as well. Very frustrated.

I’m having the same issue with my 1st gen Echo.

Still not working. Alexa says “Playing Library Radio.” Stream never starts or shows up on PLEX dashboard now playing on the two Gen 2 Echo devices running stereo with Echo Sub. Plays fine and shows up as now playing on one Gen 2 Echo Dot (both .mp3’s and flac files play fine). Wish someone would look into this.

I have pretty much no confidence that this will ever be fixed. We heard from Plex once and then never again. Disappointing to say the least.

Sorry, I don’t have any updates. I’ve reported it to the team and it’s on their todo list to check. They were able to reproduce the problem, so here’s to hoping they can find the cause.

Ok Moviefan. We understand it’s on the Todo list. But as this thread demonstrates if you consider it a poll of sorts, it is affecting a large population of loyal Plex subscribers. I will also concede that the solution may be difficult or unattainable, considering Amazon’s own product development evolution. We just need to know whether it is currently actively being pursued. I for one will probably purchase a newer echo and trade in the old one, since I have no patience for this and the holidays are coming up and I have playlists to listen to.
