Plex Not Playing Video Files With Special Characters

Hi,

On the TV Series Hawaii five o, many of the episode names contain special characters. For episode 20 of season 5 tho, the Plex media server sees the video file but always says it’s unavailable when trying to play it in any Plex app. The video will play fine if played directly from the file system using vlc. Running on Mac OS latest Plex server public release. Known issue?

Thx

So after testing this again with the latest released version, it still does not see video files that use special characters. I checked the tvdb and they are named the same, the Mac OS Sierra has no issue with the file names, so Plex server is still broken. I was hopeful this was fixed after reading the release notes, but it’s still not fixed.

Here is a screen grab of the issue. PMS sees the video file just fine on initial scan, but it always reports it as unavailable even tho it’s not.

I suppose the special characters could be removed, but the OS has no problem with it so PMS should not either.

Can you paste an actual file name in here? This should be an easy repro if the problem is the non-ascii characters.

Checking my server for Hawaii 5-0 it appears to be working with no issues. Unavailable means when plex ran a check to see if the file was there and it had access to it, it did not. Since this is a mounted video file I would double check permissions to make sure that the user running your Plex server still has access to the actual file.

–edit
Also looking at your screenshot the file is missing all of the media information. That would indicate that when the file was added Plex wasn’t able to analyze the file itself either.

Here is the actual file name: Hawaii Five-0 - S05E20 - 'Ike Hānau.mp4

@jmckee: It’s not a permission problem because I’m running PMS under the same account as I am able to play the video using VLC. I went onto the Synology server and compared permissions on it to others, and nothing different. Was it working for you before the last major PMS update that had fixes related to this? I’m wondering if it needs to be deleted and re-added or something.

To be honest, haven’t watched it before. I went and checked that specific file after reading your post to see how it was performing. As you can see though the only difference in our naming is I have an mkv and you have an mp4 container. Since you’re also on episode 20 of season 5 what happens when you play episode 16 (Hawaii Five-0.S05E16.Nānahu) does that one also have problems?

For that season that one is the only one that will not playback thru PMS.

We’ve been able to reproduce some scanner issues with that particular file naming (E20 of that show in particular) and we’re looking into it.

Good to hear. I will look forward to testing a Plex pass version when it’s ready.

Hello,

So I installed the new PMS for PP users as I saw it has a fix for these problem episodes, however it still will not play back. The problem now is a little different in that it will now attempt to play the video in Plex Web, but cannot. Whereas before it would just immediately say that the video was offline. Here is what seems to be the relevant info in the log:

Season 6 episode 1 has this same issue. @Plex devs this does not appear to be fixed as stated in the PP notes.

@plexdevs So look, I’ve reported this bug and yet it still is present even tho release notes state it’s fixed. It’s not, unless there’s some extra steps to take to fix it. Any episode that uses a special character in the file name isn’t playable. I use Filebot to name everything, so it’s using the tvdb to get these names, the same scraper PMS is using. Makes no sense. How about fixing these problems before squandering resources on things like Plex for KODI, which makes no sense? Runnng PMS on Mac OS.

Thx

I have the same problem. It also happens to me with the whole music folder, many artists and song names for my Spanish language, they have many accents in the vocal letters of the file names. It also happens with the songs that have symbols of admiration, questions and lyrics with ñ, etc … almost nothing reproduces me.

Let’s see if they solve it soon.

thanks.
