Plex not pulling metadata from internet

Plex is not pulling in anything from the net… no artist posters, no artists backgrounds, no artist bios, etc. Nothing I do playing around with rearranging Agents helps. Plex had been working fine but I just installed new hard drives and reinstalled everything, including the latest Plex server download. I pointed Plex to the same metadata SSD drive which I’d used before and edited the registry to reflect that. All I get is the album artwork from the ID tags in the files.

This has probably been asked already but searching these forums is challenging work as there are so many posts to skim over that it could take all night and half of tomorrow.

PlexMediaServer-1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9-x86 for Windows

  • Make sure the clock+date of your server machine is set correctly.
  • Disable IPv6 support in the settings of Plex Server.
  • Please look up the content of the LocalAppDataPath registry key and post it here.
  • is the SSD attached locally?

E:\Plex Media Server is LocalAppDataPath. SSD is attached locally. IPv6 disabled now but no effect. Clock correct.

This means that Plex will actually look for its metadata in
E:\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server

Please look at the folder E:\Plex Media Server
It should look like this:
grafik

If it has an additional folder Plex Media Server inside, this means that Plex ignored all your old data and created a fresh folder structure inside of E:\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server
This snag is already documented here: [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows

Yes, there’s the additional folder inside. So I went to the article you mentioned and thought I should check HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\ also but it’s not there. No Plex, Inc. entry under SOFTWARE at all.

That means the registry key should only contain E:\ instead.
If that works, you can erase the whole folder E:\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server
But I urge you to create a subfolder on E:, e.g. E:\plexdata
and move the folder E:\Plex Media Server inside of E:\plexdata
Then adapt the registry key to point to E:\plexdata instead.

All of this while Plex server is not running!

I see what happened now. That seems to have fixed everything for me. Thank you!

However, I still have no HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\
Is that critical?

This should get created automatically as soon as you install a new version of the server. When the ‘PlexUpdateService’ is started the first time.

If you use some kind of ‘registry cleaner’ or ‘uninstaller’ software, this might not work.
I can’t recommend using this type of software.
