I’m really frustrated with Plex. I bought the lifetime membership for Plex Pass a couple of weeks ago solely so that I could record TV shows from my HDHomeRun Extend and Plex’s recording is inconsistent. The three 30 min TV shows I set all recorded fine, but the two NFL football games did not. After the games were over, I heard my Mac Mini’s fan rev up for several hours, suggesting it was attempting a transcode of the football games. But then Plex reported the recording failed. Can anyone tell me where Plex stores the stream from the HDHomerun tuner? I’d like to look in that folder to see if the two football games might still be there.
My EPG listings for NFL games are frequently not correct until a day or 2 before
the actual game. I always use titantv.com to find my listings because I find it
a much better interface than Plex’s. So if I use titantv to find that team A is
playing team B on Sunday at noon on NBC, I will find that time/listing in the
Plex EPG a week before the game, it will often say “NFL foobtall: teams TBD”.
If I wait several days, eventually the Plex EPG will update to the actual teams.
If I set a time for the “TBD” game, I’m pretty sure it will not record. I always go
into Plex and delete the “TBD” game and set a new timer for “Team A vs Team B”
and I haven’t had any trouble recording NFL games.
I don’t know MacOS so I don’t know where the stream is saved.
I set it to record a basketball game this morning. It should have ended an hour ago but Plex says it’s still recording. What the hell is going on? Plex has become so frustrating to use.
When I’ve had a symptom like this show up it meant Plex had essentially silently gone fubar and required a restart. No recordings will be saved while in that state.
I have restarted Plex Server and will test this. For now, the differences in the programming that I’ve seen is:
Plex records TV shows that are an hour or less.
Plex records TV shows but not sporting events.
I’ve tried two NFL games and one college basketball game and they both failed. Every TV show that I’ve set to record worked fine. So, I will try to record an NFL game tomorrow to see if the restart fixed it. I will also try a TV show that is 2 hours long (e.g., a movie) to see if it’s time-length related.
So, last night Plex failed to record Saturday Night Live (1.5 hour duration) but recorded two shows of 30 min and 1 hr this morning. At this point, every show less than 1 hour has recorded and every show more than 1 hour has failed to record. Is it possible Plex has issues recording shows longer than 1 hour? There is plenty of space on my SSD (190 GB) so I don’t think that’s the issue.

Go to Settings / Server / Manage / Troubleshooting and click on Download logs.
Hopefully, you’ve left the default settings (Settings / Server / General) alone so that DEBUG is ON and VERBOSE is OFF. If not, then adjust those settings and then follow the above procedure after the next recording failure.
