Im not sure what to look for in order to troubleshoot this issue. Sometimes a complete game will record but way too often the recording only gets about half of a game even though it was set to record 30 minutes after the scheduled ending. And the game did not run over what was indicated in the guide.
I am going to attempt a recording of tonights Monday Night Football on CBS using my OTA Antenna and HDhomerun Flex4k. I have debug logging enabled.
Unfortunately the recording stopped close to halftime. So I only captured half of the game. Why would the recording stop at halftime when the Guide showed the game running well past that time?
Your best bet is to either look at your Plex server debug level logs around the time that the recording stopped, or post the same logs here along with information on the recording, channel, time it should have recorded, and when it actually stopped. You should also look at the HDHR logs during the time that it is recording and the recording stopped. Without logs we are just guessing since a large number of issues can cause this.
Thanks for your input. I did looks through the Plex logs but unfortunately I had other recordings going and it was overwhelming trying to cypher through. I plan to try again but only have the one recording.
Also, i hadn’t even thought of looking at HDHR logs but should have. As that is the tuner source. DUH! Thank you.
One shot in the dark guess - in your HDHR check the signal strength of a recording in process on the channel(s) where you are getting inconsistent recordings. A marginal signal strength can cause recordings to quit early.
Does the event appear in the EPG as one contiguous block?
Or is it parted halfway by some other event, like a newsreel/weather?
In the latter case, Plex doesn’t record the second half because it doesn’t know that it’s the second half. If the two parts are titled the same, Plex will assume that the second event is just a re-run and doesn’t record it because it would be a duplicate.
You would have to allow duplicate recordings while scheduling. The second half would then be available as a “version”. which you must explicitly select with “Play version”.
I just tried to record an NFL game today from 1:00-4:00 and set it up to record an additional 30 minutes. I’m just now looking at it and the game started recording and then ended 5 minutes in to it. It then moved it to the library as I had set up. The guide did show the game as one continuous time slot so that could not have been the reason for it to stop early. I also recorded a WNBA game which started about two hours after the NFL game and it completed successfully as it was supposed to. I downloaded the PMS debug logs. There are a total of 156 individual log files. Would you happen to know which ones might show what happed or do I need to review all 156 log files?
For this type of issue I would typically start looking in the “Plex Media Server.log” for the timeframe where the recording incorrectly stopped. Note that Plex rolls logs, keeping old logs as “Plex Media Server.1.log”, “Plex Media Server.2.log”, etc so make sure you are looking at the correct file based on when the recording stopped. Also look at “Plex Tuner Service.log” (log files again roll using the same naming standard, so make sure you are looking at the correct log based on time.)
Don’t forget to check your HDHR logs to make sure that your tuner isn’t being rebooted by the watchdog during recordings or some other tuner based issue. Update your tuner’s firmware if it isn’t the most recent available.
I believe I just might have found the issue. In my area that particular channel has an NTSC 1.0 channel and an NTSC 3.0 channel. In the logs even though I set it up to record on the NTSC 1.0 channel it looks like it attempted to switch to the NTSC 3.0 channel Since NTSC 3.0 is garbage with their encryption I just disabled those channels in FLEX 4K so they do not even show up in the lineup. Hopefully this will resolve my issue.
Thank You.
Nice find! I have (yet) to encounter this situation where I live, though I know it is coming.
