I’m relatively new to Plex, having just picked up an NVIDIA Shield Pro (16GB) for its Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision Support.
My Shield is connected to an LG CX OLED through a Denon 3700H receiver. My server is a Dell XPS 9570 connected via gigabit Ethernet, and my NAS devices include both Netgear ReadyNAS and Synology DiskStations.
I’m using Plex to play back 4K UHD films from my NAS libraries, and have been re-adding titles to my Plex library now that Dolby Vision can more easily be included in an MKV with the latest version of MakeMKV.
The issue I’m experiencing is that sometimes the Shield doesn’t always “pick up” the Dolby Vision flag the first time… but it will on subsequent attempts, which seems very strange.
If I open a movie and get the standard “HDR” banner in the corner of my LG display, I hit Back on the remote, and restart the movie by hitting the Play button, and more often than not, I get the “Dolby Vision” banner as expected in the corner of the display instead.
I’ve noticed this happens more often if the movie has to do any initial buffering (showing the yellow spinning dial) before play begins (initial buffering is not unexpected with massive 4K MKVs, though I am using a gigabit Ethernet connection). When I back out and restart the movie and it doesn’t need to buffer a bit first, it always seems to catch the Dolby Vision flag.
My MKVs are created with lossless quality, and I am not doing transcoding of any kind. These files are all playing directly from the source on my home LAN.
I’m happy that I can get the DV flag at all now, but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced these issues, if there’s any way to fix it, or perhaps if a future firmware update to the Shield will address it.
Thanks,
R
