Plex not seeing subtitles

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973
Player Version#: Web 4.10.1
Ubuntu 18.04

Plex isn’t seeing subtitles thats in the same folder as the media. I made sure that the following was done
Sub filename matches media filename
File is UTF8 format
Tried changing extension to TXT then refreshed then changed back to srt
Agents has local media assets as first
Refreshed media after every file change and did a scan library for good measure
Burn subtitles set to Always
Sub file moved out and back into the folder with a refresh in between

Here is the screenshot of the show and sub

Here is what is shown in plex

Check the following:

  • LMA agent is enabled for the primary agent for your Library
  • SRT file can be accessed by the user running PMS
    • Most likely a user named plex

The screenshot above doesn’t show the folder structure where your files are residing in.
External subtitles require the presence of ‘Season 0x’ folders.

LMA agent is enabled
SRT can be read and edited by the plex account

" External subtitles require the presence of ‘Season 0x’ folders."
I have other subs in the same folder that can be read by Plex without an issue.

Do you have the season subfolders or do you have not?
If you don’t, create them.
Everything deviating from the officially supported naming schema is, err, unsupported.
There is no guarentee whatsoever that unsupported naming schemas will work, or if they did work before will continue to work in the future, or will work under every circumstance.

No i do not but i went ahead and did the supported folder structure and did a library scan and metadata refresh. Same issue.

Please post the content of the Plex XML info of an affected episode here.

As well as the access permissions for both the video files and the subtitle file.

A screendump of doing an la -ls would be nice

I have a similar problem with Plex not picking up subtitles of some episodes but are fine with others. I mistakening started this conversation on a windows forum but will continue here.
This was the problem with episode showing “none” for subtitle even though subtitle file is present. Settings and Agents have been adjusted according to other posts I have read but no effect.

This shows the permissions of episode 5 media and srt. Episode 4 subtitle works fine and has same permissions as far as I can tell.

You are missing the Season XX folder for a start

Ref: https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

The files are labelled …/TV A 4TB/The Walking Dead/Season 10/The Walking Dead - S10e05.mp4

Is this wrong?

Nope, and don’t know where I picked up that you where missing the season folder!
Sorry for that, and might be due to the fact, that it’s way over my bed time here

Is the LMA agent enabled for the library?

And bedtime here, so might take awhile before I return

Yes Local Media Assets have been enabled and moved to the top of the list

I am a night owl, but this is not life and death… if you or any other moderator can’t reply until later… I will live

Your screen shot doesn’t show it for TheTVDB agent but for the ‘Personal Media’ agent.
You need to click on the button ‘TheTVDB’

Is this the screenshot you need?

Yes, that’s the right one.

Now which folder is added to the library?
Edit your library, go to the ‘Add Folders’ tab and look at the path that’s in there.
It must end exactly in .../TV A 4TB. Not one folder level above, nor below it.

Do you mean this. I have library spread over 3 drives.

Yes, this looks correctly. Then I’m stumped. Check if the srt file is actually a valid SRT file. Verify it is using a text encoding of UTF-8. If it doesn’t, convert it to UTF-8.
I recommend Subtitle Edit

Refresh Metadata of the whole season. Doing it on the single episode might not be enough.

I opened the subtitle file and saved it as UTF-8, refreshed and scanned the entire library, still no joy.

So if you are stumped then I don’t feel so bad, having tried everything I could read in the forums… so it’s not a Noob problem.

Oh, you know what, weird thing happened. In my original post back on the win server, I was showing problem with episodes 5, 6 and 7. I have been working on episode 5, have not touched episode 7 at all… now all of a sudden episode 7 shows subtitles available (but episode 5 and 6 still not) Weird.
Original Post.

Now… (and I haven’t touched episode 7 media or srt file at all.)

Episode 5 and 6 still no subtitles… and other parts of the library. What a weird glitch.
Plus now it is showing a screenshot whereas before it was black. I have not played the episode or anything.
