I have confirmed that my WD EX2 Ultra and My Cloud sees the folder and 1 file (test). I have installed and configured Plex Media Server onto the NAS. When adding a library into Plex for Movies, it scans the NAS, sees the Share I created, and then shows the movie file on the right so I know it’s configured properly.
After adding it says it’s empty. Is it not supposed to add/show the content of the share I added? This was the sole reason for buying this NAS.
I have even downloaded the updated version of PMS and updated it on my NAS.
That sounds good so far.
There’s a few considerations when it comes to Plex not recognizing certain files. Most are related to permissions (doesn’t seem to be the case here), file naming or unsupported media types (e.g. disc images / ISOs…).
Just to be clear, these exact same files play on my 2 TVs via a USB using multiple media players as well as play on Windows 10. One would think this media server would support all media types?
Plex recognizes MKVs just fine and will also play them.
The linked support article clearly mentions several formats like iso files or other disc image formats (incl. raw DVD/Blu-Ray folder structures) as the ones not supported by Plex (IIRC incl. a reference as for why that is).
If it’s not one of those – take the next checks… could it be about how your files are named (e.g. if you’re trying to add a file named as a tv-episode to a movie library (or vice versa)?
Okay this is actually pretty cool with what the issue was. I just selected “Movies” as a test and added the first file I found, which was actually a TV show. I created another share on my NAS called TV, added this as a type in Plex then added the mkv file and voila. Awesome.
Related support articles are your friends… it’s worth to spend a moment to review your folder organization and file naming to avoid any mismatches or other hiccups. While you can fix most of those inside Plex, it’s usually more sustainable to get the structure right (e.g. in case there’s an issue with your server and you have to rebuild a library… if the file organization is good, rebuilding a server is done with a few clicks; with manual fixing, you might end up re-doing all those fixes).
