My plex suddenly stopped reading all the files on my Synology NAS DSM.7.0.1-42218. I can’t see any differences in the file types it will and won’t show, but it only will show about 10% of the videos in each folder (TV-MOVIES) I’v tried deleting and re-adding the libraries several times. The only things that happened i can tell are the most recent plex update. and my NAS was shut down and rebooted. The DSM says the unit is healthy. Any help much appreciated. I’m on Mac OS 11.5.2
Usual culprit in such cases is bad file naming (or as you pointed out unsupported file types).
A tv-show library expects files to be named as such (e.g. using the sXXeYY
pattern).

Are you running Plex Media Server on the Synology or on your Mac?
-
Check and reset the file permissions on the Synology NAS.
If you are running PMS on the Synology, make sure system internal user PlexMediaServer has at least read access to the media. See Synology FAQ #19 & 30.
FAQ 19: Setting permissions to allow Plex access to media files
FAQ 30 - Migrated to DSM 7 and all my media is gone -
Verify the naming structure for your media. The new Plex Movie and Plex TV Series scanners/agents are more stringent than the legacy agents.

Sorry, and thanks for your reply .I’m running plex on the Mac. Do you know how i can reset permissions on the nas? . I’ll check the naming , that may be it if it changed with the most recent update. it had been fine before
Thanks for the update.
Follow FAQ 19, but check for the username you use when mounting folders on the Mac.
So indeed the username the Nas had was Plex and not PlexMedia Server. I changed the name, Seems like i have more files now in plex but not all . I also went through and checked each volume and checked the box Apply to all folders and sub folders. Next I’ll check my naming convention and see if that’s the issue.
what username should i be checking when i mount folders on the mac? and how?
If you want to post your server logs we can take a look. Just give use the name of a missing file
How are you mounting the shared folders on the Mac?
When I mount shared folders on my MacBook, I use Command + K, then enter smb://nas_ip_address (ex: smb://192.168.1.2). I’m then prompted for my Synology username & password (which is saved on the Mac, so I don’t enter it every time).
The username I enter has read privileges to the media folders.
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-05-06_11-43-07.zip (3.7 MB)
Logs attached. It seems like it’s only my TV data now the movies are all showing up . i did the same permissions repairs to both folders though. only 33 of 547 shows show up examples of ones that don’t show are Dr.Death.S01.WEBRip.x264-ION10 & dispatches.from.elsewhere.s01e03.720p.web.h264-xlf
As FordGuy stated earlier… file naming and organization matter to Plex – especially when it comes to tv show based content. Given the lack of that structure, it appears Plex has matched most of your files to the same shows.
Naming/organization should be like this:
video-2
TV <- the folder linked to your TV Show library
Dispatches From Elsewhere (2020)
Season 01
Dispatches From Elsewhere (2020) - s01e01 - Peter [technical blah blah].ext
Dispatches From Elsewhere (2020) - s01e02.ext <- episode title and technical gibberish are optional
...
Where .ext
is the file extension of your episodes.
You can drop the year the show first aired from your folder/file names (though it can help getting better matches if there’s been different shows with the same name.
When I saw your post I cringed. Your naming schema needs fixed asap.
If you want to save yourself a lot of time I would recommend using Download - tinyMediaManager and use ${showTitle} - S${seasonNr2}E${episodeNr2} - ${title}
as the new name format.
Ha! OK, I’ll give it a shot. Thank you everyone for your help!
I can’t stress enough how important naming and storage structure are to having a well oiled Plex experience.
Not using the correct naming Conventions may work, till it doesn’t.
