When I play a video which has no separate subtitle file and the audio shows as Deutsch(EAC3 5.1) SUBTITLES none, I see no subtitles. If I play the same video with VLC, subtitles appear. Can someone explain why the difference.
Do also use download mediainfo here
(pay attention during installation, it comes with a ‘piggybacked’ installer which asks to install additional crapware. Make sure to set/clear the right checkboxes!)
Once it is installed, analyse the file, then go to:
File - Export - Text (Advanced mode)
Not sure what you mean by client type. I tried to play it on Plex installed on androidTV. Plex on IOS does the same thing which suggests it’s not a problem with androidTV.
This file uses the HEVC video codec. And it uses the ASS format for subtitles.
Both can trigger transcoding on the server with certain client types.
But since your server is most likely not able to transcode HEVC video (fast enough), playback will fail or subtitles won’t appear.
As a test, try extracting the ASS subtitle and save it in SRT format, beside the video file (same file name, only file name extension is .srt instead of .mkv) Use e.g. Subtitle Edit
Additionally, the subtitles in the MKV are tagged as English. If you have set your preferred subtitle language in Plex as German, Plex won’t automatically enable them.
OK, finally got to generate an SRT file but when I went to play the video, I noticed that if I select a particular episode, there is a field called subtitles with a drop down and one of the options was English (ASS). I removed the SRT file and played the episode via the PLEX server and subtitles were there. Normally, I would play the show at the season level where there is no obvious subtitle option.
I then went to my TV and tried to play the same episode only to have the TV say there was a problem and to restart PLEX client and the PLEX server. Needeless to say this made no difference. I went back to the episode level and downloaded the srt file and in the PLEX server, it played correctly and showed the subs. Went to the TV and played the episode and subs showed correctly. It would seem that Android TV does not like ASS subtitles. Any thoughts?
