Plex now charging to stream media to mobile device from Plex server?

I am a long time Plex user and mainly use Plex on my Smart TV and stream movies/shows from my desktop computer. Today I was trying to stream these same shows to my Samsung Galaxy tablet. Here is the message I am receiving:

  • You can use the mobile app for free to cast media to other Plex apps, including photos and videos on this device.

  • Streaming media to this device from a Plex Media Server requires a one-time in-app purchase or signing in as a Plex Pass subscriber. Otherwise streaming from a Plex Media Server is limited to one minute of playback.

Has something changed with Plex ? I used to pay for a Plex Pass when I was sharing my Plex server between multiple households but I no longer have a need to do that. Is Plex now charging to stream movies on my Plex server to my mobile device ? Or did something change and I need to update a setting somewhere ? I am also getting this message when I sign into Plex from my cell phone and previously have been able to stream Plex to my phone just fine.

The Plex mobile apps are not free. This has been always the case.

To use them you can either:

  • Buy a Plex Pass
  • Buy the app in the app store, which unlocks it for this particular app store account

You don’t have a Plex Pass anymore, which returns the mobile app to “test” status.
