PLEX on a VPS

Hi all, I was looking to replicate my home setup on a VPS so that I can stream to family members a bit more easily. I was wondering if there are any members here that utilize a VPS to this extent and would be happy to share their provider specs/price.

I was looking at an OVH server: VPS CLOUD 1 or 2
For storage I will be using my Amazon Cloud setup that I have been using at home, so no need for massive storage, just enough power to transcode when needed and stream it to family.

While I don’t currently do this anymore, hardware is in house now, I previously uses a VPS with Bitcasa.com’s Cloud Storage, when they offered unlimited storage, with much success.

Bitcasa used Amazon servers as well so after some testing I discovered that the closer the VPS was to the Amazon facility the better throughput I got. I ended up using Linode.com and their Linode 8GB Server as their location was very close to the West Coast Amazon facility.

The media I stored with Bitcasa was optimized for streaming so it rarely needed to transcode, unless someone selected very low bitrate in the client, so I was easily handling 5-10 simultaneous streams.

Note, this was a year ago that I used this type of setup.

You said optimized for streaming, in what capacity did you do this optimizing? Do you mean via the cloudsync?

In your experience was not the Linode 8 a bit much or was it just the network speed you needed that drove you to that plan?

Optimized as in mp4, H264, ACC audio (did not use Cloud Sync).
Used a script that worked with FFMPEG

The Server specs were more for other software running on the box as well as 8TB of transfer a month
