When looking at VPSs, is a large storage capacity necessary?

Ever since what happened with Plex Cloud, I’ve been looking up several VPS companies, but the one thing that always gets me is why would I need a large storage on their side if it is just going to take from my Amazon Drive anyways?

Also, does anyone have a company they prefer to use that is relatively inexpensive?

I guess it depends on what your definition of large is, how fast you can move content to ACD, and or if you have enough bandwidth for streaming and uploading at the same time.

All those variables are at play when determining how much storage you need on the VPS.

So, I’m technically not using a VPS, but rather a dedicated server. Mine came from Kimsufi and has a 2TB drive. While I don’t actually need the space, I find it useful for encrypting and moving data around. The bottom line is that the server has a much better internet connection than I do, so I find myself remoting it often to do file operations.

The bigger thing to be on the lookout for is traffic limitations and a good passmark rating if you expect to do transcoding. My data gets transcoded a lot, so I went with the dedicated server.

I have roughly 4TB of content stored on Amazon, but I want all of that to be accessible through the VPS to mimic Plex Cloud.

I want to avoid needing to upload everything to the server which is what I see in some guides, and I don’t really find that “necessary” (granted, from my limited knowledge on this subject) if it can simply be linked to Amazon Drive.

Ideally I would like to just go with a VPS that has enough processing power to support multiple transcodes without needing it to have much space, possibly around 100-250GB.

Right. I think most of us are hosting our data in cloud storage and mounting it to the server. When I was shopping around, I never even looked at disk storage. It was at the bottom of my list of requirements.

Any service out there with a $10-15 (per month) price range that could support a few 1080p transcodes at once?

Last week I went with zxplay but I think it’s Europe based. I got tier 3 for £25 a month and just linked it to my amazon storage. So far it working great. But it’s only been a short time of testing!

So by linking to your amazon storage you aren’t utilizing the vps’s included storage, correct? If I install Plex onto this and sign in with my username, does all of my library automatically come up and give the options of streaming from my cloud services?

No. You essentially set Plex up on the VPS the same as you would a local server. You then mount your ACD using something like acd_cli and point the Plex Libraries at the Movie/TV directories under the ACD mount. You then access your Plex server via the clients just like a local server (it access the files from ACD on the fly as and when needed). Bit more to it but that’s it ‘in a nutshell’

Now it looks like I’m in the beta for Plex Cloud…will have to reevaluate any plans that I had about a VPS.
Was looking into ChicagoVPS as, from what I read, their service would support multiple transcodes, though couldn’t find much on the specs they use, but their monthly rate seemed pretty good.

Would prefer if it worked with Amazon Drive of course, all my media is still uploaded there (including items uploaded via Cloud Sync which I would lose if I cancelled the ACD), and it would make this a much easier choice.
