Server Version#: Version 4.87.2
Player Version#: Google Play store - current Dec 2023
I bought a play pass thinking PLEX was working on Android TV - and the latest Google TV. I bought second NVidea Shield Pro - replacing my HTPC in my theatre - and my new living room TV is a Hisense U88H running Google TV. Plex was going to be my media access for 3 rooms of my home.
Plex Server is running on Windows 10 purpose built SERVER machine. On a couple of Plex Windows desktop machines, I have everything working… but on my new Hisense TV with Google TV, as soon as I go to my Movie or Music Libraries, it either immediately shuts down Plex and returns back to the Android Home/Landing page - or it momentarily shows a screen that states “An update is available for the server SERVER”… and THEN it quits the program before I can select an option.
I tried this about 10 times with various restarts - including power-off/unplug - and on the latter, I was able to select “Update Now”. It seemed to do some kind of update but then quit. Subsequent starts resulted n the application auto quitting as before. I have an unusable system.
Questions:
I did not install Plex server on the Android machine - I have Plex server running on a speedy W10 machine that is the home server. Was the Update actually pushing a Plex server update to my Windows 10 PLEX server machine - or was it trying to install or update Plex server on Google TVs - assuming it was there?
Is Google TV supported just as Android TV?
How do I fix auto-quit issue so I can access my own Movie & Music libraries? If that doesn’t work, its useless to me.
PS: The auto-quit problem when accessing my libraries happens on my brand new Shield TV PRO as well. So this is not an Android TV versus Google TV thing.
Sorry, but that’s not acceptable. Its a brand new installation and just bought a Plex pass. I am not paying for the privilege of beta testing or bug fixing. I’m a brand new user and I have no idea how to create logs - nor this early in the game, in researching how to do it. I’m not looking for a computer science experiment…
I’ve tested it on two generations of Nvidia Shield and a brand new Google TV; same problem on all… so either - as I state in the subject that Plex does not work on Android - or Plex server does not work and causing each of the clients not working.
Finally, I also tried updating the Plex server - but that doesn’t work either. It says its “installing an update” and “grab a cup of tea…” - but at the end its still the same version and there is a new version on-line. A Windows restart and re-attempt does not change the outcome.
It is probably the Hisense TV and whatever Android TV drivers they are using, not Plex.
I have a Hisense TV that does something vaguely similar. It isn’t constant though so you never know if it has been fixed until a week or so later. Instead returning to the Android home screen it will restart plex randomly about once or twice a week. Right in the middle of playing a show it will go black and the Plex logo will load again like the app just launched. It is likely not the video files because if I restart the show it won’t have an issue in the same place again.
There are also other apps like Hulu and Paramount+ that will sometimes randomly crash to the Android home screen.
Playing the shows on a Roku Ultra doesn’t cause the issue.
I was able to get clients to STOP quitting by selecting “skip this update” in SERVER. Now of course I have to wait for the next one and try it again; but I see no reason why this BUG would eliminate itself …so it looks like I’m stuck with this version until I get some proper advice.
Magically my two NVidia Shields and Hisense TV all work fine now… the problem is with Plex Server.
