Android TV Plex App update 18th May broken?

Server Version#: 1.18.6.2350. (mycloudhome)
Player Version#: 8.17.1.25326. (android tv)

Since this new update was pushed, i’ve been completely unable to playback ANY media from my Plex server via the Android Tv app on my Sony Bravia. Any attempt to play anything gets met with “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”

I’ve changed nothing server side, and can access my content via a web browser but the TV is a no go. I’ve tried uninstalling/re-installing - no change. I’ve tried disabling the server on the mycloud drive and reconfiguring from scratch - no change.

Hoping it’s just a bug and it’ll get fixed, but right i can’t view a thing…

Hey Oliver, I just saw another user with the same problem. Same server version (old) and player.

Can you remove your Plex Player, install the previous version and check if works?
64bits https://downloads.plex.tv/Kepler/kepler-arm64v8a-googlePlay-stdExo-8.17.0.25120-f80c7b2d.apk
32bits https://downloads.plex.tv/Kepler/kepler-armv7a-googlePlay-stdExo-8.17.0.25120-f80c7b2d.apk

Thanks for the links. Will give it a shot when i get rid of my house guests. Would it be the 64 or 32 bit version?

I believe it’s gonna be 64, unless your tv is old. Try 64, if it fails to install it’s because your tv is 32bits

I’m helping another user with the exact same scenario.
Same NAS, same server, and player version. Downgrading the Player didn’t work for him, so I would suggest you also update your server. It hasn’t been updated for over a year.

Thanks for confirming the sideloading didn’t fix the issue - i haven’t had a chance to do anything about it yet. Unfortunately the server cannot be updated manually, Western Digital push updates to the drive and the user has no involvement with it. I’ve never tried to reach out to them before, don’t imagine they’d be all that communicative…
I think i may have to start looking at alternatives for hosting…

Yeah I just read that in their forum. That’s just ridiculous. I also have a WD of a different model, but I wouldn’t recommend anyone buying their products due to the inexistence of support

I’ve managed a workaround, but it’s not going to be one for everyone. I’ve dug out an old laptop and wiped it, reinstalled the os and have installed the Plex Media Server and just pointed it at the WD MyCloud Home. I haven’t disabled the old MyCloud library as yet, just leaving it in place in hope that the Android TV app updates and fixes the issue. For the moment it seems to be working, using the Android TV app and opening/playing files via the new server rather than the old one gets the desired result.
It’s not a fix but it’ll do for the moment.

Hi from Spain, I have the same problem with the same devices since the update, but I do not understand why Plex has stopped playing movies and episodes but some home video of the mobile is played on the Android TV.
The Plex app on the mobile has the same problem, but if I enter from the Plex web on a mac, everything is reproduced without problem.
I do not understand what happens. So is the problem with the Android TV plex app?

Apparently it is a incompatibility between the new player for Android and very old versions of PMS running on My Cloud Home. One of their employees said they are aware of the problem.

Thanks!!

Hi all,

any update here or were you able to solve it? I appear to have the same problem. I cannot connect locally to the plex server via the browser but not via the app

No solve as such - got around it by running PMS off an old laptop instead, which worked as it should. I did start communicating with WD support who at first were really attentive and committed to fixing the problem, but then they just essentially said not our problem and sent me links on how to point a server to media on a drive and other useless stuff like that - so don’t expect it to ever get fixed at their end because as far as they’re concerned there’s no problem to fix. Your only hope is that Plex retrofix the app to work with geriatric server versions.

My tv was on the way out anyway so i actually just bought a new TV that wasn’t running Android/Google and naturally the issue is gone now. I’d prefer to be using Google TV over Samsung’s OS but it works fine.

Heja,

thanks for the reply, a bummer really. my TV is working just fine so i dont expect a change there anytime soon. i’ll try to push wd to perhaps change to a mirror instead of a home cloud, that seems to work well as the mirror versions give you much more control over how what is working.

for the sake of the community i’ll share updates here as well if i get out of WD but as you mentioned, hopes are slim. a bummer really
