Plex on Chromecast with Google TV

Hi All,

Have only recently got pretty heavy into Plex Media Server, but seem to have inconsistent performance issues on Google TV (new Chromecast).

My Setup
Plex Media Server 1.22.3.4392.600 on Synology DS412+ with transcoding DISABLED (Synology is not powerful enough).
2x Chromecast with Google TV
TV 1 - LG BX OLED
TV 2 - Sony Bravia 4k 2015 with Android TV (non-HDR)

Playback of HEVC 4k HDR footage (various self ripped BluRays and some downloaded HEVC 4k test sample videos from Kodi’s site).

TV1 - LG BX OLED, playback via Chromecast with Google TV.
Playback is flawless, only config changes made was to disable any form of conversion on the Plex Player App.

TV2 - Sony Bravia 4k 2015 (non-HDR)

  • with built-in Android TV, Plex App won’t play 4k HDR content, as assumed due to the lack of HDR. When I use Kodi with the Plex Add-on, plays 4k HDR content plays fine (colours a little washed out as expected).
  • with Sony+Google TV (Bravia 4k with Google TV) Plex App still won’t play 4k HDR content, despite the App running off Chromecast with Google TV.
  • with Sony+GoogleTV+Kodi, the Plex Add-on plays 4k HDR content fine (albeit colours a little washed out, which is easily fixed with a dynamic contrast setting on the TV).

If I’m using Google TV, should that not have the necessary codecs to play the video? Not sure how it relies on the TV (I could be wrong). Kodi+Plex add-on seems to work fine, and this is what I’m currently using on the Sony+Google TV.

On the Sony+Google TV - the Plex TV app doesn’t allow you to use an external player neither, as MX Player / VLC seems to still be able to play the 4k HDR content on the TV fine (colours a little washed out).

Any help would be appreciate as I would prefer to simply use the Plex App on my Sony+GoogleTV (without Kodi) - main reason is because I use the official Plex app to access my DVR.

Not that I can help, but I experience similar problems with latest server and latest android client on Chromecast with TV.

When I play back a HEVC encoded HDR movie on my android mobile, playback is direct and colors are excellent, as expected.

When I play back the same movie via the chromecast tv, playback is also direct, but colors are washed out.

That is rather unfortunate since I have to recode the movie into SDR.
