Plex on DS218: Unable to use https

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: plex.tv./web

Hello I setup Plex on my Synology DS218+ and after selecting secured connections preferred every time i access plex.tv/web i get asked to allow once or always to access unsecured. Not sure what is wrong with my setup or what i am missing. In the past i was running PMS from my MAC and https worked.
thanks for any help
Noel

Any idea what could be the issue?

Synology has the ‘redirect HTTP to HTTPS’ option.

Doing this interferes with Plex’s certificate. DSM tries to inject itself in the communication.

Turn the option off.
On your LAN, you are physically secure.
When remote, access port 5001 instead. This is always HTTPS

turned off the ‘redirect http to https’ option but i still get the plex screen to allow once or allow always because it cannot connect securely. I even restarted plex server. Any other ideas?

Can you show me please?
Are you using your own certificate/DSM created for you certificate anywhere?

EDIT: Did you restart DSM ?

Hi ChuckPA
yes i restarted DSM and still same behavior. i did not created a certificate dsm is using the default certificate.

Thanks
Noel

You see this in your settings?

Yes

Hi ChuckPA any other suggestions?

No because Plex is written to implicitly trust your home LAN as local .
We know that you’re using wired connections or encrypted wireless (unless you run your wifi unsecure).

PMS also knows that anything which is not Local is therefore remote. gets encrypyted.

I think there is a bit of a hang up here on seeing https in the URL. HTTPS is not required for the Plex/Web app and the server to exchange data securely. This is how Remote Access works. It looks like HTTP but isn’t.

i am still experiencing this issue when i go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop

i know that all local connections will be ok but when connecting remotely i dont get the green lock i can see when accessing a friends plex server

i have specified in plex prefer https connections but still doesnt work

anyone experiencing a similar issue?

Please do the following:

  1. Stop and restart Plex
  2. Try to open the synology again (http://ip.addr.of.synology:32400/web)
  3. create the failure
  4. Stop Plex
  5. Open fileStation
  6. Go to the Plex share / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server
  7. Right click Logs
  8. Compress to Logs.zip
  9. It will create a ZIP of the logs manually
  10. Attach that ZIP file here for me to see what it doesn’t like, please.
