I’m consodering buying a My Cloud Home to run as a plex server, because of the nice “travel size”.
We have a cabin without internet, so I’m wondering if Plex will work local connected to a router without internet?
From what I read, files are not accessible through My Cloud app without internet, but I’m hoping Plex will work
Hello. Yes, you would need internet to watch your PLEX media server while travelling. I don’t know where you live, so I don’t know if you have access to metro wireless internet service. Regardless, you need to have an internet service of some kind to watch your content on your PLEX media server remotely.
4+ years ago, I purchased MyCloud PR4100 16TB server. I collected over 1000 movies and 69 TV series, ripped them to my PLEX media server in MP4 format. Before starting the initial rip process, I researched what the most common formats were for my movies & TV series, and settled on H.264 for video and AAC for audio.
While doing the rips, I also wanted to be able to access my PLEX media server remotely while travelling. Since I already had internet service, I did some research that enabled me to open a port or “pinhole” in my internet firewall. Once I successfully did that, then I was able to access my PLEX media server remotely when away from my home (and abroad on vacations). I wanted to share my PLEX media server, and so I sent invites from my PLEX to my brothers & in-laws and their families, and to my close friends, so are able to watch my movies and TV series remotely through their internet service providers, using devices including ROKU, Amazon Firestick, Apple X-box, internet-capable TVs, cell phones, tablets & notebooks, etc. Many now enjoy my collection, and I’m always looking forward to adding to my collection “when the price is right”, as I look for bargains of reduced pricing, including on Amazon and eBay.
I wish I would have done it sooner, but right now, I’m very happy and glad I did.
It can be done but it may not be worth it.
There are a few reasons that Plex needs Internet connectivity.
If you do a Google search you’ll find articles on how to run Plex locally.
I tried a couple of times but found that it was more trouble than it was worth.
I use Kodi on a Fire TV Stick with a 500 GB SSD attached. It’s a compact setup and works fairly well.
Thanks for the describing reply😊 I understand that plex wont work remotely if I have no internet connection. What I meant was if it would work if I take the My Cloud Home with me to the cabin (that doesnt have internet or cell phone service), and connect it to a wifi router there, that isnt connected to the internet.
I think I have made up my mind, and buy a Synology DS220J to have at my home, and continue to take my WD My Passport Wireless Pro with me when I am going to my cabin👍🏻
