Just about a month now I have had numerous problems with Plex. Firstly, when I reset Plex on my QNAP server (after it so wonderfuly disconnects) my internet will intermittently drop out. By that here are some specific examples: when connecting to a website, I get the error that the page may be misspelled and cannot connect. HOWEVER a few seconds later it connects. Also simple task like Adobe or Steam will not connect to sign in, but after a retry they do. (Adobe actually does not). When I go into my QNAP and stop Plex, everything works fine, I can log into peripherals and websites.
I go through the whole reset, and Plex will work for a few days then mysteriously it just drops out. I’ve taken Plex off of the QNAP to see if maybe it was the NAS interfering with the connection and everything works fine.
Also something rather strange has happened when I log into plex on the QNAP server, I continually get the “Finish Setup” screen, even though I go through and save all my preferences and use plex at home.
I tried doing my due diligence and looking up prior post, but nothing really solidifies what’s happening, and I see the post from Plex ‘oh its not us its your equipment.’ Ive updated, firmwared everything till I can try nothing else.
I understand how this may look to you but an application like Plex CAN’T disconnect service for anything else. That’s not how it works.
THAT HAVING BEEN SAID …
How is your internet service setup as it comes in from the ISP?
Does it go into a modem/router which your QNAP and PC connect to
-or-
Do you connect your internet service directly to the QNAP, then use the QNAP firewall services, and have your PC plug into the QNAP or some other arrangement?
I was wondering too if the QNAP was providing a service to the household, such as firewall or routing. If Plex managed to hang up the QNAP during that time, it could theoretically disrupt the other services the QNAP box handled.
Since that isn’t the case, I’d look into the nighthawk router. When Plex causes an internet hiccup, check the status of the router. See if the web interface (which I assume you use) also becomes unresponsive. If so, we need to find out if Plex somehow ties up the router with enough traffic (I don’t think it does anywhere near that much, but you never know) that all other devices (your PC) get no response. It’s highly unlikely, but it’s all I can think of.
If spelling is correct, [try running Windows Network Diagnostics](javascript:diagnoseErrors()).
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN
Then it proceeds to the page. As far as the amount of traffic there is ZERO use of plex at the time it happens. I’ve used it and had everything turned off. Same result. The ONLY way it remedies is if I go into the QNAP interface and suspend PLEX. Again, how this affects the net I have no clue as my PC doesn’t connect through the QNAP to the nighthawk.
If you saw some of the things I’ve seen, you’d know why I sometimes ask the stupid questions. It deliberately elicits the needed info which otherwise might seen insignificant but be the actual problem.
If you think about how TCP/IP works, unless PMS is 100% saturating your upload, it’s impossible to take down your DNS.
What does your DNS resolve through?
1.1.1.1 - 8.8.8.8 - 8.8.4.4 – Or your ISP (who probably has a DNS proxy cache) ?
Sadly Chuck I’m oblivious to what you just said. So most likely it could be something stupid on my end, and I’m not network savy enough to figure it out.
Hi! I have a few questions to clarify your set-up. I have multiple QNAP NAS on my LAN and have Plex running happily, maybe we can find some differences between your set-up and mine.
Firstly, when I reset Plex on my QNAP server
Can you explain exactly how you are doing this please? On my QNAP NAS I go to App Center, Stop Plex and then Start it again. Is that what you are doing too? It looks like it from your description but I want to be 100% sure.
I’ve taken Plex off of the QNAP
I assume you mean by this that you deleted it, and then reinstalled it.
Did you install from the QNAP Store or from a Plex download?
When you re-installed Plex, how have you exposed your NAS to the Internet? Have you done port forwarding in your router, relied on uPNP or done something else?
Are you free to say what else you use the NAS for? Do you have any networking services like VPN or any meshed services like crypto set up?

Did you install from the QNAP Store or from a Plex download?
[/quote] Installed from the Plex downloads via manual install on QNAP
I Use uPNP, have read to try and turn it off then on to reset it. Didn’t work, The only thing I did in the router was make the QNAP a static address.
QNAP is purely used for PLEX, nothing else. I do use NordVPN and uninstalled it thinking that may have done something but to no avail.
It sadly is ONLY when enable PLEX on the QNAP that this happends. If “STOP” it or uninstall it, everything works fine. Yes, everyone tells me this is impossible and I’m very far removed from Networking know-how. But I’m just reporting what I see
Again, thanks all of you for taking the time to do this.
As a side note, I had PLEX running for over a year on the same setup, this only started happening within the last 2 months.
nighthawk logs will be where you see any issues. I agree with @ChuckPa Chuck that this isn’t a plex issue but something else. I assume you have no reverse proxies set up in your network?
And the computer you are seeing these DNS issues from is receiving its DNS settings from the nighthawk and not manually inputted?
