Plex on NAS (PR4100) stops playing video and goes back to the begining

Server Version#: 1.15.4.993
Player Version#:

Hi All,

So pissed that I pay for PLEX and there is no customer support… Now I am on my own but hope the community can help me with my problem. I cant seem to find any fix for my issue anywhere online.

I purchased a Western Digital PR4100 NAS drive for the sole purpose of running PLEX on it. My issue is when I play a video on any device it plays for awhile perfectly but then all of a sudden restarts to the beginning of the video. This will happen about every 15 or so minutes and its basically unbearable since I have to continue to fast forward to where I left off. I have no clue where to even look or what my issues can be. The log files don’t show any errors but I do get the following warning: [CompanionPlayer] We already have a handler, overwriting and the following error once in awhile,

My media server is the newest available and all devices (Nivida Shields, Windows Web App, and on Android phone) are on the newest release.

I do have one other issue which is a pain. When I log into the PR4100 it does say a Plex update is available and installs. However, when I go to the app it lists the version as a 7 digit number with no periods and doesn’t match with the actual current version. Then on Plex it shows that there is a new Version ( 1.15.4.993)…I manually installed the update 1.15.4.993 and now my PR4100 shows the version correctly but STILL shows there is an update available. At least now the Plex portal shows I am up to date…

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I just did the “Update” on the PR4100 to be able to show the version number and it is version 1723878. But like I said now when I go into the Plex portal it shows I have an update to 1.15.4.933.

I do get an error now when it restarts the video: [“Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost”.

Looking at the steps you have taken, you might have accidentally downgraded your PMS. What version does it report in the PMS settings page (Web Client)? Thing is, that Plex changed the version number format, so now WD dashboard reports that there is an update available, but if you update, your server gets overwritten with older version. Not sure it is the case with you, but please check.

Hi Corwin_X,

My server is version 1.15.5.994 and I just installed it manually on the PR4100. I still have the problem with my videos restarting to the beginning. Any other idea what could be going on? Thanks for the help though!

Hmm, does it happen with all you videos or just some? And how is your PR4100 connected to the network? I am asking because symptoms you have might be literally anything from HW failure on PR unit to network problems, connection losses, wifi issue (might have strong signal, but with the lot of interference connection drops might still occur).

Just to be sure, check the cable from PR unit to switch and from switch to router if applicable - half of the network problems are caused by failing / broken cables.

Restarting to the beginning would hint at the Plex issue as plex should resume playing from last position even after connection drop… Would you be able to enable logging on the player which suffers from this issue, then enable debug logging (NOT verbose) on server, reproduce the problem and post the logs here? I will probably not be able to get a hint from the logs, but you have much higher chance of attracting a wild dev passing by your thread if logs are present
