Plex on QNAP TVS-1282 Update to 1.41

Server Version#: 1.30.0

I’m hoping to get some advice on upgrading to 1.43 on my QNAP. I recently lost access from mobile and am being told that I need to be on 1.43 in order for it to be compatible from the Plex App on mobile. I tried the manual update and couldn’t get it working. In the process, I ended up removing the 1.43 and reinstalled the 1.30 from the app store. I’ve been able to get it back up and running but I lost all my configuration and have begun rebuilding playlists and such.

Now that we have the background out of the way, my question is in 2 parts:

  1. How can I upgrade to 1.43 on my nas.
  2. What is the best approach to backing up my configuration so that if I have to deal with rebuilding again, it won’t be so much work. I’ve had to rebuild several times over the years and am thankful for the core data being backed up but not sure how to save all the work I do in playlists, etc.

If you’re on PMS server version 1.30, I recommend:

  1. Upgrade the existing to PMS 1.32.8 (this gets you most of the DB migrations)
  2. Next upgrade to PMS 1.41.3, giving it time to perform the significant DB changes which occurred as of 1.40.0.

When complete,

  1. No reinstallation needed
  2. You will be at 1.41.3 (which provides minimum for the new apps)
  3. Be ready for PMS 1.41.8 when it releases

Where can I download these versions from? I’m having trouble finding them.

I’ll PM you the links for the packages.

  1. Manual Install the first one.
  2. Watch the QTS CPU load until PMS has completed all its upgrading and the CPU is idle again
  3. Next Manual Install the second one.
  4. Again, watch and wait until the CPU load has completely returned to idle.

You can restart PMS at that point to confirm everything is upgraded.

Don’t hesitate to ask here if you have any questions.

It actually took less time for the 2nd upgrade than the 1st. Is that because my DB wasn’t really that large since I just nuked the whole thing my mistake before asking for help?

Also, what’s the best way to backup/recover the db so that if this happens again, I don’t have to go back through and rebuild my IMDB Matching/playlists?

Nuking the DB (uninstalling) before the upgrading erased everything so your new DB was pretty small. It didn’t have time to accumulate all the problematic records as well as everything associated with incremental upgrades over time.

The best way to do backups, which can be done from the GUI.

  1. Create a shared folder named (exactly) PlexData. It can exist anywhere.
It’s a placeholder and won’t actually contain any data.

  2. Restart PMS , let it run a few minutes, then Stop PMS

  3. Open FileStation and look inside PlexData

  4. In it you’ll find Plex Media Server.

  5. Click into Plex Media Server. (You’ll now see all the server’s internal files)

  6. Highlight everything in that view (at the top)

  7. Compress everything to a ZIP
    – Don’t forget to change the name (FileStation doesn’t git a good name by default)

  8. Let it do the ZIP backup

  9. restart PMS when complete

Looks like this.

Will there ever be a PMS 1.41 or greater available in the QNAP App Center that can be installed the easy way? Highest I can get right now is 1.30.0

Yes, there hopefully will be.

On May 3rd 2025, 1.41.7 was submitted to QNAP for testing and publication.

Hi ChuckPa, can you please provide me the link to PMS 1.32.8? I’d like to do that same and upgrade to 1.32.8 and then to 1.41.8, thanks

@scotts_ga

Check your PM.

Thanks ChuckPa

Hi ChuckPa, I am in the same boat.
Could you PM me links to both distros?
BTW, when I go to the area to download the QNAP “previews”, I am fully signed in, but as soon as I click on “QNAP Server” to get to the QNAP downloads, I am signed out, and it shows no downloads, of course because I’m not signed in. I go back to the original server download page, and it is like a scene from Groundhog Day. I have attempted this in both Chrome and Firefox with the same results.
Thanks in advance.

@blueskymedia

Which version of QTS is installed?

Please confirm the CPU ?

Here’s what I have:
TS-869 Pro
v4.3.4.2814
Intel Atom D2701 2.13GHz

Hi @ChuckPa I’d also like links to the relevant QNAP packages too please if possible

I’m running a QNAP TS-464 (QTS 5.2.5) (Intel Celeron N5095) which is still running the default QNAP PMS 1.30.0 (checking for updates I still don’t see 1.41.7 yet)

I’ve just downloaded the qpkg for 1.41.8 for Intel

Thanks

Hi @ChuckPa I’m also need link to the pms 1.32 package if`s possible

I have QNAP TS-453A (QTS 5.2.5, Intel Celeron N3160)

thank you

Please explain why you think you need 1.32.8

I ask only because if you’re already above 1.40.0, you can’t safely go back without restarting from scratch. (we just confirmed this with a few others)

Also, we’ve discovered cases of specific DB damage caused by power fails which PMS doesn’t detect until too late and my DBRepair is not programmed (Yet) to look for – which might be happening soon)

Thank you for reply.
I need 1.32 version because i have 1.30 and want upgrade to 1.40 and avoid damage DB.

If there is other damage in the DB, it won’t show until 1.40.

I advise you make certain to have a backup before you start the process because once you go to 1.40.0, rolling back is risky.

Depending on how big the DB is, it will take time. My TVS-1282-i7 with SSDs takes time.

Thank you! All done. Now PMS 1.41 on my old qnap work normal.
