Update from Plex 1.30.0 to 1.41.8 on QNAP TS-673A

The QNAP App Center only shows theold 1.30.0 version of Plex server available to install. This means my library is no longer accessible from my iPhone (I get message “TS-673A - Outdated” when I try). I’ve manually installed Plex Server 1.41.8 but this didn’t work! It also destroyed all my categories and other meta data. So I had no choice but to reinstall the “QNAP approved” version 1.30.0 and start rebuilding my categories etc.

Is Plex 1.41.8 supported on the QNAP TS-673A? If it is, what could have gone wrong when I manually installed it? All advice gratefully received.

Sorry to hear that you’re having trouble upgrading. I have a couple questions about your situation.

Am I understanding this correctly, in that Plex Media Server is running but not in the same state that it was? Are your existing libraries still there?

One major issue with your situation is that to go from 1.30 to 1.41 will likely not “just work”. There have been multiple releases between with significant Database changes that you would need to upgrade through several specific versions. A recent example of this can be found here:

Plex Media Server 1.40.0.7998 is now available to Plex Pass users in the Beta update channel.

PLEASE NOTE: This version makes changes to the database which will make it compatible only with server versions 1.31.2 or higher (released March 14 2023). You will not be able to use your database on Plex Media Server versions lower than this after this update.

In order to roll back a database to an older version than 1.31.2 you would first need to downgrade to 1.31.2 (up to 1.32.8) and then downgrade from that version afterwards.

We have bumped the server version right up to 1.40.x to signal this change.

Please also be patient when updating to this version if you have a very large database and allow the upgrade process to finish.

NAS vendors holding such a old version in their store is a problem that we are aware of and are trying to resolve with each vendor where we are supported.

Restore a Database Backed Up via ‘Scheduled Tasks’

Do you have any database backups?

If so, you could restore the backup before you tried to upgrade. The server would be missing info since the backup occurred, but you would not have to rebuild everything.

Also, on QNAP, do not uninstall Plex Media Server. Doing so also deletes the Plex Data Folder, completely wiping out your server (QNAP requirement, not Plex). On QNAP you can install the desired version directly over the current version without uninstalling first (but you cannot fall back from 1.40 or higher below 1.32.8 due to database changes).

Before you attempt another PMS update, consider running DBRepair for Plex Media Server. It will fix structural problems with the database. Start with the AUTO option. If that passes, then no need for more options.

I’m in this same boat now, QNAP app store doesn’t host anything after 1.30.0, I need to manually install PMS updates from 1.30.0 through 1.41.8. Is there a download folder for older PMS versions? I would need the packages for the Intel/AMD 64-bit (QTS-4.3 and newer) builds.
